Brussels Ontario invites
mayor of Brussels Belgium

A special invitation has gone
forward to the Mayor of Brussels,
Belgium to attend the Brussels
Centennial celebrations over the
July 1. weekend.
This community was shocked
by the car crash that claimed
the life of 16 year-old Brian
Lawson Ward, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lawson Ward of the' 5th
Concession of Grey Township.
The fatal accident occurred about
1:15 A.M. Sunday when the car
he was driving hit a tree while
travelling along Huron. County
Road 16, four miles east of
Brussels.
He was removed from the
crash scene to Wingham and
District Hospital and his
death occurred, from injuries
received, while being transfer-
red to Hamilton General Hos-
pital.
Born in Listowel Mr.Ward
attended Elementary School in
Grey Township and received his
High School education in Lis-
towel District High School. He
was an employee of Campbell
Soup, Listowel.
He is survived by his par-
ents, two sisters, Katherine and
Connie at home and three bro-
thers, Keith, of Listowel, Larry,
of Grey Township and Gerald
of St. Marys and grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Heibein of
Hugh Pearson, Centennial
committee chairman, said de-
cision to extend a special invi-
tation was taken at a meeting

Home,Brussels, at 2 P.M. on
Tuesay, Mayl 6th with the Rev.
E. LeDrew officiating. Burial
took place in Mount Pleasant
Cemetery, Ethel.

Smith, Greg Hood, Bruce Fis-
cher, Ricky Heibein, Murray
Hammel and Lane Ward,
Flowerbearers: Doug Conley,
Ron Heibein, Paul Hammel,
Steven Pearson and Ed. Miller.

Police arrangements for the
four day event were discussed
with OPP Corporal Crockill who
told the meeting special policing
would be provided as required.
Special emphasis is being'
placed on the arrangements for
Sunday, July 2 which will
feature a massed choir
representing the four Brussels
Churches under the direction of
Don Dunbar as well as a Sal-
vation Army Band, Rev. Eric
LeDrew reported.
Rev. Harold Snell of London
will preach at the mass church
service.
In addition to the invitation
to the Mayor of Brussels, invi-
tations are to go forward to'
the mayors, reeves and councils
of surrounding municipalities.
The Agricultural Society
reported plans to erect ten ad-
ditional bleacher units at the
fair grounds.
Parade arrangements were
advanced. The Woodstock Maj-
orettes who will be guests of
Bruce McCall will take part.
The committee agreed to pro-
vide an additional prize for the
best group effort. Mr. McCall
was named Master of Ceremonies
for the Saturday afternoon pro-
gram.
The celebrations will •
conclude with a fireworks dis-
play on Monday night.

make people wonder if our streets
have become drag strips. Well on
into the early morning hours the
cars race up and down with tires
screaming. It seems almost mir-
aculous that there have not been
serious accidents. Let us hope
that they do not occur. The driv-
ers must forget that burning tires
cost money.

The Brussels firemen have
already begun their preparations
for the Centennial. They have
installed red, green and blue
decorative lights in the business
section. This is just a start with
more to come.

An exciting addition to our
Centenary parade is to be the
famous Dorothy Galloway twirl-
ettes of Woodstock. They will
participate in the Centennial
through the generosity of the
Brussels Stockyards Limited.
This is a group of 45 young
ladies who deserve to be called
famous. They have travelled ex-
tensively and have won many
awards. A number of the group
have been champion twirlers. The
girls are under the direction of
Mrs. Dorothy Galloway. In addi-
tion to appearing in the parade
they will present a performance
. at the park during the day. Beaut-
iful girls, eye-catching cos-
tumes, and outstanding ability are
sure to inspire enthusiasm in
their audience.

Now that clean-up, fix-up,
paint-up week is over does not
mean that we should cease our
efforts to have our Village pre-
sent as an attractive appearance

tennial guests. Litter bugs are

OPP carry out
investigations
in district
During the week May 7 to
May 13 investigations were car-
ried out by members of Wingham
Detachment of the OPP included:
Five investigations under the
Liquor Control Act with four per-
sons charged.
Ten charges laid under the
Highway Traffic Act with nine
warnings issued.
Twenty investigations under
the Criminal Code of Canada.
On Sunday, May 7, Robert M.
Shiell of R.R.#2, Listowel, was
seriously injured when the
vehicle in which he was travel-
ling on Highway #87 left the side
of the road and struck a tree.
