Win
In Opener
The Brussels Bantams eked
Out a 1-0 victory over Delaware
in their first game in the Clinton
Bantam Hockey Tournament.Both
teams were scoreless until Bruce
Blake picked the puck up in his
own end with only four minutes
remaining in the game. As, he
stepped over the Delaware blue
line he let go a wrist that the
Delaware goalie handled easily
but before the defence could clear,
the puck, Bruce tucked his own
rebound into the upper left hand
corner. In the final minutes the
Delaware team pressed hard and
the situation looked grim when
Murray Nichol picked up a
tripping penalty with a minute
and a half and Danny Campbell
received an elbowing penalty with
thirty seconds remaining to leave
the local lads two men short.
Delaware pulled their goalie and
in the fading seconds put on
pressure. It was only with the
superb goal tending job turned
in by Hugh Nichol that Brussels
was able to gain a victory.
The next game Brussels plays
in the tournament will be at.9:00
a.m. on Sunday, March 5 and
will be against either Ilderton
or Moravian.

Centennial Year enthusiasm
must be inspiring our hockey
players for they are proving
themselves formidable opponents
on the ice. The Intermediates
in semi-final playoffs defeated
Atwood on Friday night making
it one game apiece in the three
out of five series. They played
in Listowel on Tuesday night,
no score available at this time.
The next game is in Brussels
this Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
Barry Peters is the coach. Our
Midgets won the WOAA Western
Ontario Trophy defeating Lions
Head Tuesday of last week by a
score of 10-4. They were pre-
sented with the trophy at Brussels
arena on Tuesday night. They
are now playing in the OMHA
quarter finals against Thedford
in a two out of three series and
won their second game here
Tuesday night. The Novice team,
by defeating Belgrave, won the
right to enter the. WOAA Novice
"E" championships. The perfor-
mance of these teams might just
give Brussels Ontario Champ-
ionship teams to parade in our
Centennial activities. Good Luck
fellows, your fans are rooting
for you.
We would all like to welcome
to our school Darlene Brown, a
new grade eight student from
Brampton.
We also had a visitor Mr.
Stretton. He is a student teacher.
He came to visit us on Wed-
nesday to learn the methods of
teaching.
Thursday the grade 7 and 8
classes performed their French
plays to the grade 5 and 6 classes.
They were both very humorous
and enjoyable.
On Sunday Susan Langois went
to Clinton to speak. Unfortunately
she did not place.
In sports this week the stand-
ings are as follow: Glenn
McLean, Laureen Barbour,
Maxine Watts, Randy White.
In the semi playoffs, Glenn
McLean's team put out Maxine
Watt's team, Randy White's elim-
inated Laureen Barbour's team.
Now in the playoffs are Glenn
McLean's and Randy White's
teams. For the grade 5 and 6
volleyball the standings are:
Lori McClory, Keith McLean,
Gail White, David Watts. In the
playoffs are Lori McClory's and
Keith McLean's teams.
The dance committee has org-
anized an Activity Night. There
will be volleyball, ping pong and
other games set up. The winter
break is coming up soon. It will
be from March 18 to 2'7.
Mr. Stretton, a student teach-
er from Brussels, will be visiting
our school every Wednesday until
the end of April to lear n some
of the skills of teaching. He will
be in different classes during his
stay.

The BruSsels Novice team
gained a berth in the ,WOAA
Novice "E" Championship by
defeating Belgrave, in two games
straight. Brussels is now waiting
to play the winner of the Zurich
and Lion's Head series which, at
this point, Zurich leads one game
to nothing.
In the first game of the Bel-
grave series the local lads struck
early and lead by two goals after
only five minutes of play.
Belgrave cut the score to 2-1
with a goal at the ten, minute
mark of the same period and
that score stood until BrianScott
tipped in a goal mouth pass with
only 13 seconds remaining in the
second period. Both teams came
out hustling in the final frame
but neither was able to get on the
score board.
The second game was a dif-
ferent story however, as
Brussels came out skating and
tweaked the twines twice before
the period ended. The boys
notched four goals in the second
period and another in the final
to walk away with a 7/0 score.

Although Clerk-treasurer for
the County of Huron, John Berry,
could not say exactly what it
would mean in total dollars,
members of council voted them-
selves an increase in mileage
from ten cents to 12 cents per
mile effective March. 1.
The executive committee
chaired by McKillop Reeve Allan
Campbell, said that the raise
would put county councillors in
line with all other county per-
sonnel as far as mileage is con-
cerned.
It was Anson McKinley,
deputy-reeve of Stanley, who
wondered how much the increase
would cost the county taxpayers.
"How large an item is this?"
asked Mr. McKinley.
"There is no way to tell,"
answered Clerk Berry.
nets was called on to make only
a couple of diffiCult saves in
recording his third shutout of
the year.

Derry Boyle, Reeve of Exe-
ter, was th e first councillor
to oppose increases for mile-
age.
"We hassle over the ser-
vices to our people but there's
no difficulty approving some-
thing for ourselves," observed
Reeve Boyle. "We just raised
our annual stipend a while ago.
I see no reason to raise the
mileage rates."
Several councillors agreed
with him but the vote tarred
easily to approve the increase.
