Thompson, D.V.M. Sab-District Veterinarian, Canada - - Department of Agriculture, faffirlia/..11.• Health of Anlirnals Branch, Seaford. Ontario Confirmed cases of rabi es in. ,animals continued at relatively high level•in Huron County during the 12-month period ending March 31, 1971. Total confirmed cases in- volving both domestic and wild animals were 33 for the 12-month period. Undetected cases of rabieS in animals in an endemic area usually far exceed the confirmed incidents. During the year 5,378 'dogs and cats were vaccinated at some 29 `free Anti-Rabies Vaccination Clinics conducted in the county by the Canada Department of :Agri. culture, Health of Animal's Branch, and the Huron County. Health Unit. This represented an increase of 5.10% over the pre- ions Year. Huron CoUnty continues' to be ' among the counties of Ontario with a 'higher incidence or rabies. The wild life populaion of skunks and foxes in the area continues to be relatively high. These animals are the main vectors of spread or rabies to our dortiestic animals and for this reason any unusual actions in these animals should be treated with extreme caution, Contact between these animal and domestic animals or hunians should be immediately reported to the Health, of animals Branch. or the local Public Health Unit, in order that proper evasive action can be initiated to eliminate further spread of the disease, Rabies is a virus which affects the central nervous system of animals and humans. The symp- toms produced by the disease vary from incident to incident, hilt. by and large, all animals behave in a. pecular Manner arid attempt to attack other animals and thus propagate the disease, as live virus is frequently present in the saliva of infected anlinals. The disease is usually fatal. un- lese propel.- evasive eel ion is taken prior in the onset of symp- toms of the disease. It. Would appear the rabies will continue to pose a potential haz- ard to dogs and cats in Fitiron- 00i1/10, 10 ado t6. 4116V1fittj THE BRUSSELS POST ROY W.
