HISTORY OF THE
VILLAGE OF BRUSSELS
This review of the history of
Brussels is gleaned fr.om books
and newpaper article, But many of
the Interestig stories of our village
and district have never been
printed tull are being lost through
lack of interest on our part. Por
an hour of sheer enjoyment I
would commend to you a visit to
801)10 of oily friendly older citizens
who will love to talk to you and
carry you hack to their youthful
days„ They may tell you of trips
Made by 0N-tOam or even on 'foot
WW1 a Sack of wheat over their
shoulder to have it ground into:
flour at Harperhay • a poiro near
Seafoith, before there were anj
mills here, •
They may tell you an intrigu-
ing story of a barn-raising • when
every man in the community •
would join to build a barn for a
neighbour, To finish the day, an.
hour of games, such as hammer*
throwing, a tug-ofwar :and a. grand
and glorious dance, which for
skill and grace and right-down tau.
:put ,our • modern .daticeS in the
shade.
James Scott says in: this book
The Settlement of Huron County
"There is a deep-rooted pride in
the heart of every Huron County
man because he does in fact
believe that be is a little different
perhapt a. little better --: than
other peolpe." Perhaps as a village
we have some of that same feeling.
There are many things We could):
wish for our village. I'm sure If we
took a vote, we would find a great
diversity of requests, But I 'think
we would all welcome a small in-
dustry for our village, so that, at
least some of our young people
could find employment without
going far afield.
We have fine churches. dedi-
cated Ministers, an active Mons
Club, a. busy Herticultural Society.
Our Women's Institute and our
Lodges, all contributing to the
betterment of our village and
joining to make it a place of
friendship and good-will.
T would like to conclude with a
verse borrowed from Katharine
T-tale in her book, "This it
On ta rio".
This is my land, overheard it
Making a promise out of clay. All
is recorded,
Early green, drought, ripenets,
rainfalls.
Our village fears, and festivals,
When the first tractor came and
we cheered it.
And as the wind, whose note Will
deepen
Trt the upg, rowIng tree, who runs
for miles to open
His throat above the wood, my
song
With that increasing life grew
strong,
And will hare there a finished
form to sleep In.1
