NATIONAL CHILD
SAFETY DAY
The year-round safety of ehild-
run is the objective of• a _nation-
wide Child Safety Day observed
on the first Sunday in May each
year. Thin one-day awareness
campaign is promoted across Can-
ada by the N'ational Safety
League of Canada ;and the Canad-
ian Highway Safety (l'ottncil. The .
clergy of all faiths together . with
national and provincial associa-
tions and organizations and the
,news media .are being asked to.'
take a prominent part. in direct ,
ing attention to the high, neglect-
ed ineideniee of accidents among
children and encourage every pos-
sible measure for the reduction
of this needless. loss of life and
injury.
In Canada each year, more than
2,100 children under the age. fifte-
en die from accidents and around
half a million are injured. Most of
these accidents could have been
prevented and should never have
,happeaed. A national summary of
Child fatalities han been prepared
and, although it is not Complete,
it stows Major accident causes.
The population of Canada is
younger than Most people think.
One out of every three people, or
more than six and a half million
Canadians, are under the age of
'fifteen. The importance of pro-
tecting this aget group 'cannot
'be over emphasized as they form
a major part of bur great national
resource.
The appalling toll of our youth
taken annually by accidents
should be of great concern to all
Canadians. More children die
from accidents than from the
nett four causes of child deaths
put together, -. :7 c:oncer, diseases
of the respiratory systeni, (pneu-
monia, bronchitis, etc.) ; birth de-
feats, and diseases of the digest-
ive system, :( gastritis. duodenitis,

is the responsibility 01: ail adults
to guide and protect. children from
the hazards that surround them.
Accidents do not just, happen. A
set of circumstances which With a
little foresight could have been
avoided, all too often costs a
child's life or results in injury.
