One of the. biggest problems in
controlling tuberculosis is to nor-
rent the mistaken belief that the
ritsesse bps been all brit Ontieller-
ed. according to the Canadian.
Meoieni Association. Tuberculos-
is still a dangerous disease.
People see tuberculoSis sana-
toria with eminty beds being con-
verted to other uses, but few
understand that the main reuson
for these, empty beds is the, grea-
ly reduced length of hospital treat-
ment as result of improVed drugs
and methods of treatment. Al-
though there is a low death rate
from tttberClosiSi about 6,000 cases
are discovered each year in Can-
ada infected With the tuber-
culosis germ annually.
Studies indicate that while
there hes been a gradual de-
creaser, in. the number of cases Of
tuberculosis since shortly after
the last war, we may be reaching
a levelling off Petted, In 1962,
for the first time in many yeat:L
there was actually an increase in
the number of eases of tubercu-
losis in Canada. This was e,Vident
in several provinces and in sonar
arias er the Phited States.
A disturbing feature of the
tuberculosis picture is that we are
eneouuterine an appreciable. numb-
er Of sma ll loraTIOCI epidemics
in certain communities and bus-
iness organizations . and we also
see some appalling instances of
mem at cases in families.
The C.M.A. recomendS that all
anparently healthy persontit Should
enlist/1t their family nhySicians re-
garding a tithetenTin skin teat

IS known to he positive,. an annual
