SUGGESTIONS FOR VICTORIA
DAY HOLIDAY MOTORISTS
Hon. Irwin Haskett„. Ontario
Minister of Transport has the
following suggestions for Victoria
Day holiday motorists.
1. Check your car, especially
the brakes, steering, tires, and
lights. Itis the owner's respon-
sibility to make sure the car is
in a safe, operating condition, A
car which stalls or breaks down
in traffic is a hazard to evez•yone
on the road.
2. If you're towing a trailer,
make sure it has two attachments
connecting it to .your car, as re-
quired by la*. If one snould
fail, the other prevents the trailer
from becoming a, hazardous "run-
away". And remember to make
allowances in speed and man-
eouvring when you're towing
something.
3.. Leave a safety iiiargin be-
tween your car and the one
ahead. At least one car length
for• every. 10 miles of speed is
needed for reacting to an emer-
gency and coming to a • stop.
Leave even more room if you are
towing a trailer.
4. Load your car carefully so'
passengers and luggage won't
interfere with your view ot the
road or ham Per your driving
movements.
5. Travelling at , night with a
heavy load in the car or trailer
MY direct your headlights at a
higher angle and tend to "blind"
oncoming drivers. Be partieularly
courteous about dimpling your
lights for the convenience of
f`th or traffic.
6. Highway fatigue can be dead-
ly. If you're travelling far, take
rest breaks along the way. But be
sure to get well off the travelled
part of the road, so you Won't be
a hazard to others.
7. When you leave the highway
for the country road to the cot-
tage, be particularlY alert.
There won't be as much traffic
hut there may be a slow-moving
farm machine. an animal or
another car around the bend or
bill.
S. Speed too feSt tor conditions
is a. leading cause of accidents.
