OATS OCT OF STYLE
-Ontario's oat acreage will
decline and be replaced with
barley, winter wheat and corn",
assents Dr, C. stoshopf, Crop
Science Department, Ontario
Agricultural College, Guelph.
Stuce 1955', worm production
or oats has decreased 33 Per cent
while North American production
has diminished 35, percent. Why?
Oats cannot compete roi the
higlier returns received on, other
grains 'like barley and wheat,
even. though the cost of product-
ion is approximately the same.
Yet, in Ontario, 1,7'60,000 acres
were devotee to oats last year,
while only 113,000 acres were
used for a more profitable crop,
barley.
Wily. then, are oats still being
grown in Ontario? The food value
is no higher than, foe instance,
corn or other cereals. Corn aver-
ages 3,628 pounds of total digest-
ible nutrients per acre compared
with 1,207 irons oats. "While oata
are easy to grow, the real answer
is tradition", exclaims Dr. Stos-
kept.
"Barley, winter wheat, and torn
are the alternatives", Dr. Stoskopf
relates. ""If corn isn't Suitable,
then plant winter wheat or bar-
ley. With proper management, you
can gain substantial profits from
ail of them.'
Though oats produces more
bushels per acre than, barley,
barley still renders the greater
yield. Barley not only weighs
more, but it only Contains 10 to
,12 percent hull as opposed to 23
to 30 perpent oat hull. Since
barley is good feed, why grow a
mixture of oats and barley when
pure barley produces greater
yields? "Why earn less?" Dr.
Stoskopf asks. "You shouldn't be
growing oats"
