12 - month period ended March
31, reports UDA's Health of
Animals Branch,
Confirmed cases totaled 1,413
an increase of 255 from. the
previers 12 months but, far be-
low the record 1958-59 period
when Were were 2,550 cases,
.1,171 of them involving domeat-
ic animals.
In Ontario, where .8.1 per cent
of the rabies caSes Oecured, the.
Health of Animals Bra.nch - -
in co-operation with local author-
ities - - held 100 clinics to pro-
vide free vaccination for pets.
More than 1(5,000 dogs, and cats,
were immunized at the clinics
held in municipalities through-
out the areas where infection
was most severe.
Wild animale, prIncipally
foxes and skinks, again account-
ed for the majority of cases lost
year. The number of infected
domestic animals rose by 191
from, the 1968.64 total of 415
Although the situation is not
itlarming, authorities are . con-
cerned over the fact that dogs
I accounted for more than half the
increase in cases involving do-
mestic animals. The number of
j'abid dogs rose to 167 from 70 a
yea7 earlier.
Health of Animals Branch
veterinarians point out that, de-
spite the increase, rabies has not
become established in the canine
population and' that there has
been no instance of a dog trans-
mitting the disease to another.
Failure by owners anal some
municipalities to control dogs is
cited as the reason. for the tin-
swing to the disease in the an-
imals. In each case, the dog
picked up the disease In an en-
counter with a rabid fox or other
wild animal.
Federal veterinarians again
sound a warning to Ovaners; Have
your dOg vaccinated; keep it under
control and do not permit it to
ran at large.
The Health of Animals Branch
will hold more clinics this year in
Ontario. Some are also planned
for Quebec.
