The regulars were there, the whole dirty dozen, a caste pi: curious characters, criminally inclined. One stranger was there. I took him for Rivard, but not so. He seemea to know more about wrecking cars than snakes. i paused a moment and said, to my- self, these fellows will know what they are talking about and no doubt have seen some terrible reptiles. They have all had delirium tremens, called the blues years ago. it is a condition caused by the system. becoming saturated with alcohol and af- fects the brain and the vision- ' ary muscles of the eyes. I waited. I my turn and had just killed my first mountain, rattler when I was called a liar and told to shut up. Backer said to get out, "Hiss off" were the Words he used. i looked for protection froni, the proprietor but there he stood. staring at me just like a bald headed eagle ready to pounce on its prey. Its not funny when that prey is Me. Well, I "hissed off" outside. No doubt you would like Me to tell you about the strange experience I had with a whoop snake, years ago, Now whoop snakes were not as plenti- ful as the wild pigeon, but they did become extinct about the sane time. 'this reptile, was a slim type, not much bigger around than a garden hose but sometimes 30 feet longs It had a long tail, and used this as a weapon. It would gran, the tail in his mouth and then start to roll. It was the quickest living critter on earth. - When it struck it just opened its mouth and the tail hit with tremendous speed. I was very young and one Saturday I went to town with a tieighbont, Poe Hawthorne. Doc had a nice new black democrat, which of course is a cross between a buggy and a light wagon, We were coming home by the .5th line and centre sidero4d. Doc didn't. notice the snake's tail across the Wheel track and ran over it. I looked back, and stirs enough, there was ( the whoop snake going into act- ion, tail in its mouth, it started rolling towards us. The old mare did her best but had no chance. Anyway, the tail hit the hub on the hind wheel. It hit so hard it raised the other side of the vehicle two feet off the ground. We kept going, but ams, 'I coula see that wheel becoming a. red- dish, rosy, color and the hub was Swollen to three times its normal size. All at once it exploded and spokes, hubs and tires were blown high Sky. We unhitched front the wreck and crawled on the old imare's bacx and got home. Doc warned Me never to' tell tor fear they might say he had been drinking so I have kept it a secret until now; There will be some who will doubt this authen-.• tic information, but if yob.. wont. believe this, now autalt the wild Back in Ireland St. Patrick was an Irishman who, by strategy and stealth. drove all the snakes from Ireland.
