REPORT FROM
quEEN'S PARK
(By Murray Gaunt M,P.F.
Huron-Bruce)
April 9, 1965
Murray Gaunt, Liberal member
for Huron Bruce, today question-
ed the advisability 01 we govern-
ment's move at this time" to put
brucellosis control on a voluntary
basis in Ontario.
Mr. Gaunt told the isegislature
he approved of the issa in prin-
ciple but felt it was premature
"by two or three years" in view of
the fact that the disease still
exists, even though one per cent
or less of the cattle population
of Ontario is still infected.
The government proposes to
amend the Brucellosis Control
Act of 19156 by , making vaccin-
ation of female calves voluntary
insteal of compulsory.
"We have just completed
srovince-wide testing of herds and
incidence of the disease is lim-
ited but it has not been com-
pletely eradicated." Mr. Gaunt
said.
"When we have moved to con-
trol it, I question the wisdom of
taking any chances that it might
vivre u p again.
"In two years time, I 1lieve
we could be sufficiently advanced
in suppressing the disease to
have such voluntary legislation,"
he added.
Mr. Gaunt also questioned
whether there would be a prob-
lem with Ontario breeders ex-
porting breeding stock to the
'U.S. once vaccination against
brucelossis was put on a volun-
tary basis.
