If ever a boy was in trouble it's me. I said, Mr. Hawthorne, do yoU think my mum and Daddy would mind if I stayed here with you. Oh, says Johnny, I'm afraid, Gapher that would never do. The gypsies seem a• little closer to the path now, and the white horse seems bigger, and then a message, what would Grandma do, she always told me if in doubt, or in trouble, to pray, taught me this only last summer, "Keep me from sin by word or deed, and help me, 'dear Lord, in time of need". Well, never was a prayer answered any more quickly, or so happily. John- ny, as soon as he got my atten- tion, started looking in his pock ets, By Gad, Gapher do you infOW what I've done, says he; I've lett. my tobacco at home. Dad bought about .60 buckets and Johnny tapped. Boy, what fun this was for me (about 7 years of age). We had two sugar kettles hanging by a chain from a stout cross arm— one for cold sap the other always kept boiling. A big back log, and tin to close the fire in. This night of all nightS Johnny was going to "bile" until midnight. I coaxed and coaxed and finally got permission to ga, but must be home by nine o'clock. Would I be frightened to come home alone? Me. frightened! Why good heavens, I'm almost a man. Nothing scares me. So Johnny gave me the pork rinds to carry. (These we put in the kettles tc keep them: from boiling over) and Johnny and I and my big black collie dog, Darkie, headed for the hush. Now I forgot to mention that Johnny was a real entertainer. He played the mouth. organ, sang folk songs and gav6 recitations, well, when the fire was going, the sap gathered and the kettle boiling, we sat down on a plank that rested on a block of, wood, Johnny commenced his. program with the mouth organ. which greatly displeased Darkie. However, T made him, sit between my knees a nd'h eld fingers over his ears so he couldn't hear. Then came the folk songs. "The Wild. rolonial Boy", "The Ship That Never I ed", "Fair Fanny Moore", "Barbara Allen" and others. This over, Johnny recites the Emigrant's Lament, a real tear-jerker. Hair way through the tears were' rolling down my cheeks and I'm sobbing my heart. out. Now it's Darkies turn to help me. He gives Johnny a dirty look puts his paws on my shoulders and keeps licking my face till the tears stopped. Well, Johnny re- plenishes the fire, fills up the BRIDGE Phone 24,". Anyone having hay to se :Johnny pauses while he pulls out contact: a monstrous silver key and watch Jack Thynne Phone 273W house, Johnny in the lead, me close on his heels, and then Darkie. Johnny's memory was bad. He started talking about seeding, as he walked along I saw him stick Lhe cloy pipe be- tween the only two teeth he had, pull out a monstrous thick plug of tobaccy, whittle a pipe full and pur the rest of the way home. Johnny was as cute as an Irish fox. May he rest in peace, and, Dear Lord, give me back some of the faith I have lost. Truthfully Yours. T. K. F. WANTED — WED.-THUR.-FRI.
