One March Johnny decided to
"bile" sap. Dad bought about .60
buckets and Johnny tapped. Boy,
what fun this was for me (about
7 years of age). We had two sugar
kettles hanging by a chain from a
stout cross arm— one for cold sap
the other always kept boiling. A
big back log, and tin to close the
fire in. This night of all nightS
Johnny was going to "bile" until
midnight. I coaxed and coaxed
and finally got permission to ga,
but must be home by nine o'clock.
Would I be frightened to come
home alone? Me. frightened! Why
good heavens, I'm almost a man.
Nothing scares me. So Johnny
gave me the pork rinds to carry.
(These we put in the kettles tc
keep them: from boiling over)
and Johnny and I and my big
black collie dog, Darkie, headed
for the hush. Now I forgot to
mention that Johnny was a real
entertainer. He played the mouth.

However, T made him, sit between
my knees a nd'h eld fingers over
his ears so he couldn't hear. Then
came the folk songs. "The Wild.
rolonial Boy", "The Ship That

Moore", "Barbara Allen" and
others. This over, Johnny recites
the Emigrant's Lament, a real
tear-jerker. Hair way through the

me. He gives Johnny a dirty look
