BRUSSELS NURSE HONOURED
BY LONDON DOCTORS
Recently, one of the bigot
tributes a group of doctors could
pay to any nurse, was accorded
Mrs. John J. Kelly, R. N. of
PrWilsels.
Atm Kelly, head of the della-
ery ,rOom at St. Joseph's Hospital,
London, for . the past 20 Mall!
until her marriage, was honored,
by London obstetricians and
and gynaecologh3ts at a dinner
at the London Hunt and Country
Club. During the presentatien,
Dr. W. R. Fraser informed he
that a number of doctors had ooi-
tributed to a trust fund to en-
tablish a Margaret sussell prize is
obstetrics to be awarded to the
nurse who obtains highest marts
in obstetrics in her graduating
year. Mrs, Kelly was also pre-
sented with a' silver tea service.
For Margaret Russell, the care
of a mother and her child hab
always fulfilled the highest aims
of nursing. After her graduation
from St. Joseph's Hospital School
of Nursing in London, she con-
tinued post graduate Work in
obstetrics at Royal Victoria Hos-
pital in Montreal. atter a feW
years in private duty nursing, she
returned to London where she
was appointed head of the delivery
room at St. Joseph's Hospital.
The past 20 years has seen a
marked change in the care of
expectant mothers, Mrs. Kelly
observed. Pre-natal classes are
now standard procedure for most
mothers-to-be and the emotional
as well as the physical well being
of the mother is considered. She
also remarked that the average
mother today is more interested
,and wants • to be completely
informed so that she can actively'
participate in the safe delivery of
her child.
"There should be pre-natal
classes for fathers as well as
mothers," Mrs. Kelly said, expres-
sing a wish that husbands be as
well informed as their wives.
This. has a two-roid effect, Mrs.
Kelly added, since the husband:
gains more insight am Meanies
more undertanding of his wife.
in discussing the many cOlittOr
versial 'aspects of obstetrics to-
day, Mrs. 'Kelly stressed the ini-
portance of pre-natal educatios.
Natural childbirth, she said, Is
a choice to be made by thet
mother on the advice of her.
'physician. Once the decision has.
been made, she added, the mother-
must he thoroughly instructed..
The husband's presence in the.
delivery room, a practice cur-,
rently adopted in the. Unite&
States, but not widely accepted!
in Canada, has no value, she said,,
unless the father has Medved/
sufficient instruction and prepay-
ation.
