On Saturday, June 20th, the
Michie reanion was held in
Morris 'DownshiP with a splendid
dinner, in the United church,

the North Group of the UCW.

Cecil Parker was the scene of a
pleasant surprise on Friday even-
ing, June 19th. when a group of
friends, neighbours and 'the
members of the stag, of the
Canadian Imperial Bank of Cora'
merce, of which, Mr, Parker is
the manager, walked in and
presented them with a lovely
pole lamp.
The address as read by Mrs.
James BrYans and the gift pre-
sented by Mr. Roy Cousins.
4uchre was enjoyed during the
evening and a delicious lunch
served by the ladies assisted by
Judy Parker and Mrs. Verna
Williams of London.
FORMER BLYTH REEVE
DIES IN HOSPITAL
William H. Mort-Ht. 69, reeve
of Blyth until a month ago, and
a life-leng resident of that vill-
age died in Victoria Hospital, Lon-
don, Saturday. MT. Merritt had
been in hospital for seven weeks.
11 was the bon at the 'late Mr
and MTS. Benjamin Merritt. A
veteran qf the First World War,
he was a member of the Blyth
branch of the Royal Canadian
Legion. Mr. Merritt was reeve
for 1.4years until poor health
forced his retirement
He was a Member of the ses-
sion of St. Andrew's Presby-
terian. Church and of the Mas-
onic Order. In private life Mr.
Merritt was in, the farm: mai,
chinery sales business,
He is survived by his wife,
the former Gertrude Marshall of
Walton; two daughters, Mrs.
Maurice (Maureen) Bean, of
Aulairn, and Mrs, Brock (Janis)
Vodden, of A,ntikokan Ont.; oat!)
brother, James, of London, and,
five grandchildren.
The body rested at the Maker
funeral chapel, Blyth, until 1:30
p.m. Tuesday. A funeral ser-
vice was held at St. Andrew's
Presbyterian Chnteh at 2:30 p,nr.
Tuesday. followed by Interment
in the Blyth UttiOn cemetery.
Rev: R. TT, McLean, of St, Au-
drew's Church conducted
service. A Service of the Masonic
Order was held at 8;00 P.M. on
Mende v.

Lions Club
News Items
The local Lions Club held their
closing meeting of this season
at the Pops Park here on Mon-
day . night • Approximately 58
Lions and their ladies attended
the delicious barbecue steak
supper. The weatherman sinned
on the affair and a delightful
evening was eployed.
A bus load of Lions accompan-
ied by their wives, anticipate
a trip: • to Toronto on July 8th.
There they will participate in the
parade of the Lions, International
Convention on that date.
The cpen house. at Camp
Woodeden • (Crippled Children)
on Sunday, will be attended by
a number of Brussels Lions and.
their Wives;

The regular ,June meeting was
held in.' the Walton, public school
June 15th at 8.30 pmi. with all
members present.'
Nutmerous subjects were dis-
cussed regarding :the school
business. The snool rate re-

Bruce Marlatt, of • Bruseels,
Passed away in Victoria Hospital,,
London, on Thursday, June 18, in,'
his 3Sth year. after a lengthy
illness.
He is survived by his wife, the
former Pauline Greenwood; two
sons and two daughters, Wayne
Tarry. Judy and I3arby, all at
home, his parents. Mr, .and Mrs.
Clark Marlatt of RR. 2, Scotland,
Ont., and one sister, Mrs. Steve,
(Jean) Fordor of Delhi.

Mrs. Whittled was the former
Hazel Ellen Archibald, a daught.

Thomas Archibald. Following
her marriage to R. W. (Dick)
Whitfield, they farmed on the
14th concession of Grey Town
ship until they retired. to Brus-
sels in 1956. Mr. Whitfield died
four years ago. She was a.

Surviving are two sisters,
'Mrs. Roy (M a yme) `Purvey.
Brussels. and Mrs- Jean Miller.
Walton; and ono niece, Mrs,

Funeral service was held at
the D. A, Rann funeral home on
Monday, at 2 p.m. conducted by

Burial took place In Brussels
cemetery.

MRS. JOSEPH AMES
Mrs. Joseph Ames died at her
home in Ethel on Saturday in
her 91st year. She had just
recently returned home after
spending the winter with her
eeranddaughtee, MTS. John R.
Coghill', RR 2, Listowel.
Mrs. Ames, the former Me.ry
Elinor Bryan, was born n How-
ick Township, Jane 6, 1814, and
was. a daughter of the late
Williani and Ellen (Frances)
Bryan,. On Sept. 16, 1896, she
was married to Joseph Ames.
Following their marriage the
couple took up farming on the
4th Concession of Grey Town-
ship, and in '1921 retired tot
Ethel. Mr, Ames died in April,
1941. Mrs. Ames wa,s a member
of Ethel United Church. a life
member of the WMS, and a
charter member of 170W of Ethel.
United Church. She was a memb-
er of Eithel Women's Institute
for 'more than 50 years.
Mrs. Ames is survived by two
daugh ters, and two sons: Mrs.
Cecil (Edythe) Bateman, Ethel;
Mrs. Frank (Lyla) Hunter,
'Oshawa; Can F. Ames, }Tamil:-
ton; and
. J. Bryan Ames, Atwood;
there are also '21 grandchildren,
and 41 great grandchildren. One
daughter, Mrs. John (Gertrude)
Snell died in 1956. and one son
in infancy.
The body rested at the
Peebles funeral home, Atwood,
until W:.`lnesday at 11 a.m, when .
removal was made to the United
Church, Ethel for a frineral
service at 2 pm,

of the beginning of Anglican.

Bishop of Georgian Bay, preach-
ed to a large congregation.
Murray Smith was the. Bishop's
staff bearer,
The Rector, the Rev. H. L.
Jennings, read outstanding
events in. the history of St.
John's and also read a list of the
memorials placed in the church.
The large choir rendered an
anthem and a quartette with
Irma Bernard as the soloist.
