The Induitrial Mortgage & Trust Company ESTABLISHED 1889 Contact our Representative: REPORT FROM QUEEN'S PARK (By Murray Gaunt, M.P.P.) The Provincial Government in- tends to give police in Ontario the power after July 1st to remove license plates from cars they judge unsafe at spot checks. Motorists who do not submit their vehicles to police ordered safety checks will be liable to a fine. A motorist whose plates have been removed, will have to have. his car towed away. Police will keep the plates until they have proof the car is safe. Pr'oevincial Treasurer James Allan brought down the third straight billion dollar budget on Wednesday. Filighlights of the budget are: 1. An additional 2o a gallon on gaSoline for a total levy of 15 cents effective mid- night Wednesday, 2. Tax on diesel fuel for vehicles increas- ed by '2 cents effective midnight 17"rq.1 n sda y. 3. Hospital Care insurance premiums will be in- creased to 13.25 from, $ 2.10 monthly for singe Persons and to $6.50 from 1,20 for family units effective July 1st. 4. Cor- porations will be given acceler- ated depreciation reflecting the degree of Canadian ownership in line with 1963 federal legislation retroactive to June 13, 1963. Nducation again gets the biggest share of provincial reven- ues to record 419,332,000 of which 101;300,000 will go to universities in operating and construction grants. School grants were increased 62,100,00'0 to 285,400,000. Perhaps the greatest hardship of the budget will fall on fam. flies, of limited means through a 60 per cent ii.crease in hospital 'insurance premiums. This is indeed a steep increase which, will make them the highest in Canada. The fear is, that some people in low income groups would drop oat of the Ontario scheme because of increased premiums. These are the very pelaple who need coverage the most because any sickness would undoubtedly leave them in bad shape. February 28th is the last day for drivers to get their 1964 license plates.
