Coaches For .Fleas.l.
Twice a day, Ml's, Else Torp,
gf Copenhagen, takes fifty-tWe
fleas, one by one, from their
gold-plated, velvet-lined boxes,
and, for ninety minutes lets then),
feed On her arm!
Mrs. Torp is the owner-ring-
Master of EttrOPe's only flea cis,-
ens and as the insects keep her in
luxury she feels it is only fair
that she supports them, too.
Since her father started, the
circus thirty-three years ago,
more than 16,000 performers
have appeared under the minia-
ture big-top in Copenhagen's
world-famous Tivoli Gardens,
where business is brisk and re-
warding,
Hers is the. Only flea circus in
Europe. Present star of the fifty-
two-flea troupe is Maclame Bab-
ette, the tightrope walker. Other
stars are Drak, who lies on his
back and spins a tiny rubber ball
and Flash "the fastest flea on
earth."
At each performance four fleas
harnessed to tiny chariots race
six inches to a finishing line;
while two others, hanging from
the cross-bar of opposing goal-
posts, throw a football across a
six-inch field!
Mrs. Torp uses only female
fleas. Males are not strong
enough to pull the various
coaches, chariots and carts, most
of them more than two thousand
times the weight of the flea.
The insects are harnessed by
line aluminum wire around the
neck. Placing the wire in posi-
tion is a tricky operation and oc-
easionally an insect is decapita-
ted in the process.
Mrs, Torn buys about seventy-
ive fleas' a month from a fam-
ily in Jutland. "They are not
very clean people," she told me,
'and that is fortunate for me,
is healthy fleas are difficult to
hid these days."
The basic training period of a
flea lasts a week. In this time
wen a dull one should be able
a) climb a ladder or take part in
tug-of-war. More difficult
stunts need twelve days' train-
ing. A flea signed on when two
weeks old can look forward to
„four months of good eating.
"'here's a rumour in Copenhagen
that pensioned-off performers
ire dropped on to local dogs, like
horses being put out to grass,
but Mrs. Torp denies this.
Mrs. Torp's son, John, an opti-
cian in London, spends part of
the summer in Copenhagen, act-
ing as barker for the circus. He
snakes all the circus equipment,
including the exquiSite tiny gold-
plate coaches.
The fleas perform on a white
sheet under a strong light and
are easily seen, but Mrs. Torp
provides close-ups through an
outside magnifying glass.
A big thing about this unusual
circus, claim the posters, is that
no patron takes away more fleas
than he brings in with him!

Those .400 Hitters
Are Very Scarce
It has been 18 years since the
American League saw Williams
bat .406, 29 seasons since the Na-
tional had Bill Terry at .401. The
American, has had one in 36
sears, the National one in 34.
Since the founding of the A.L.
in 1901 that circuit has had sev-
en batting champions at that
level, by five 'men; the National
four, by two men.
Nothing emphasizes the great-
ness of Rogers Hornsby more
than his .401, .384, .424 and .403
averages from 1922 through '25.
Ty Cobb did .420 in 1911 and
.410 the following year. George
Sisler won the AL crown with
a .407 mark in '20, came back
two yearg later to win it again
at .420.
But since Terry's .401 season
in the National, the closest a
hitter could come was Arky
Vaughan's .385 in '35, a substan-
tial 15 points shy. In the last 20
years the nearest is Stan Mus-
les. .376 in '48, a fat 24 points
away.
Aside from such Williams av-
erages as .388 in '57, his .369 in
'48 and his .356 in '42, the closest
another American League hitter
could come to .400 since Ted's
.406 was Billy. Goodmans' .354
championship pace in 1950, a big
46 points short.
Obviously it takes a super hit-
ter to come close and yet, many
a man in that class has failed.
Tris Speaker's 8,515 base, hits
were second only to Cobb's 4;191.,
but Tris never made the .400
Club. Neither did Hems Wag-
ner; Eddie Collins, Paul Waner
nor Musial, all with 3,000 or
more hits, Simmons, Joe Di
Maggio, Ruth,.. ',Gehrig, Foxx,
Gehringer,. Lombardi, JVIedwick
and many others in the modern
era swung great bats, and boys
like Mays and Aaron are still
sWinging them, without .400
memberships.
It takes something far beyond
the status of the average to cook
a .400 dish.
Links With Early
Civilizations
The earliest civilizations lavg4n
al(44 the hanks of great rivers
in warm countries where the soil
is deep and rich, often flooded
and plastered over with river-
Mud, and very, very fertile, Such
rivers were the Nile in Egypt,
the Tigris and Euphrates in Mes-
opotamia, and the Indus in
Egypt is like a long winding
snake with a head — a land
600 miles long and 15 miles wide,
ending at the sea in a giant delta
100 miles wide made by the many
mouths of the Nile. This long,
narrow river country was flood-
ed yearly by the melting of the
snows in the mountains of, Ethi-
opia, sometimes to a depth of
twenty feet. So fruitful was its
soil that three harvests a year
could be taken up,
In like manner the waters of
the Tigris and the Euphrates
were swollen to flood, each year
by the snows of Armenia, and
carried down the crumbled soil
to spread it over the plain and
to push it out as a great delta
into the Persian Gulf. Here, TOO,
as in Egypt, men learned to work
together to guide and control the
flood waters by digging canals
and ditches and making sluices.
They marked and measured the
land. The yield of their harvests
was sometimes as much as eighty
times the amount sown,
The abundance of food in
Egypt and Mesopotamia gave •
men leisure to study the things
on earth and the heavenly bodies
in the sky. They observed the
order of the seasons, and the
changing pattern of the stars.
They learned to make records to
store up their knowledge, and
so to pass it on to their children,
Men have always been curious
to know things — with that kind
of curiosity which still makes us
peer round corners, open doors,
find out how things work, and
see what will happen if we do
so-and-so, . , .
In Egypt men used a picture-
writing that we call hieroglyph-
ics — a Greek word meaning the
"priestly writing." They wrote
on papyrus sheets, stuck toge-
ther end to end, and rolled them
into a scroll. The dry sand and
rainless climate of their country
has 'preserved fragments of mas-
ses of these papyrus records from
complete decay. We dig them up
from the ruins of old cities —
eometirries from, the old rubbish-
heaps of the cities.
The men of Mesopotamia wrote
on soft clay ,in cuneiform or
wedge-shaped writing, so-called
because each- impression was
made by pressing on the clay
with the triangular end of a
stick. Different groups of wedges
made different letters. This
writing because it is on clay
tables is indestructible. Thou-
sands of the tablets' have been
feund end read. And if anyone
today is so hasty as to think that
these' long - forgotten men and
women of far-off antiquity do
not matter to him, let him know
that we reckon our days in hours
of sixty minutes each of sixty
seconds because that was the
way the ancient Babylonian as-
tronomers worked it out.
This is a mighty link with
Babylon. If ever we begin to
feel rather superior to those
strange folk we can remind our-
selves also that on some of their'
queer baked clay tablets schol-
ars have found sums -of square-
roots, and even logarithms —
things that are likely to puzzle
yotingsters today when they
'learn mathematics. —From "A
History of the Western World,"
by L. 3, CHENEY.
