Spbrts, the mask, he plans 10
wear, in future hockey games.
He has had his cheekbone
I twice broken by flying pucks.
He loves the House of Commons
'and has lib desire to leave it
and go "upstairs" to the House
of Lords.'
Another story is that he has
grandsonss, coming along who
give promise of being Churchills
of.the future. And Sir Winston
is said to be anxious to avoid
their being harassed and
thwarted in their political ca-
reers by hereditary barriers be-
cause their granddad took a
peerage from, a 'grateful nation.
These hereditary barriers may
ithr ;!nay y:not ,he removed in the
near future. But Sir Winston, in
the meantime, remains Sir Win-
ston.
Why hasn't Sir Winston been
Father of 'the House, of . Com-
mons 'before, considering, that he
first entered it nearly 60 years
ago? The answer"is: that the title
of Father, of the„.Heuse goes to
the MP who' has sat. there for
the, largest number of consecu-
tive years.
Sir Winston had a gap from
1922 to 1924 after being,defeated
'at the polls. '

sir Winston Churchill Sias

he has taken his bQw as Father
Of the House of commons,
When most public' figures .e
fourscore years and five would
be inactively retired, Sir Win
atone was in his. parliamentary
seat with a beaming lace when
the new Parliament got down.
to business for the first time,
Oct. 27.
Prime Minister Harold Mac-
millan made a gracious bow to.
Sir Winston when welcoming
hirn, as the new Father of the.
Rouse. Mr. M a c nal 11 a n was
speaking about ,,,the changes
'which the recent &edit% had
brought about in the faces as-
sembled in .ParliamVit.
Then the Prime Minister said,
"Fortunately, one great figure
remains — a rock that resists
the floods either of 'time or•en-
noblement.,-7, my Right honor-
able friend *the Meniber for
Woodford (Sir Winston Church-
ill) who has now added another
distinction tcrtherqinany ,Which
he has gained over the years."
There was laughter from: the
packed Commons at the,,Prime
Minister's remark that ennoble-
ment had failed to remove Sir
Winston from i the Hbuse of
Commons. „ ,
It is the custom in nritain that
most Prime Ministers are given
earldoms when they have corn-
pleted.their service in the high-
est political office. In modern
times there have been Earl
Baldwin, Earl Lloyd - George,
and Earl Attlee,
Sir Winston is : considered to
be in a classification all his own
on account of the fabulaus,/„sere.tr.
vices hd has rendered to his -
country.
Of course he could have had
an earldom if' he had wanted
one,,pneen: ,Elizabeth II is said

him. Or he ,Colild, have had a..
dukedom ,which is reported, to
have been offered to him by
King George VI after - World

A dukedom is at the very' top
of the aristocratic ranking, and

But Sir Winston has remained

'There a r e
tions. One is that nothing would
induce him to g4dlilethe' rich
and honoured name. of Church-
ill except to become the Duke
di Marlborough, which in Eng-
lish history is as rich and hon-
oured a name as Churchill.
But there already is a Duke of
Marlborough who is head of the
Churchill family. Sir. Winston
Was the offspring , of a younger
son of an earlier Duke of Marl-
borough.
If his father had been an
elder son and heir to the duke-,
dom, Sir Winston most likely
would not have become Prime
Minister of Britain. And in that
case the history of Britain and
even the world cdnceivably
could have been different, re-
membering the Battle of Britain
days, writes Peter Lyne in the
Christian 'Science Monitor.
It has become a legend in poli-
tical circles that Sir Winston
said "The Duke of Marlborough
for me or nothing," even though
the story may not be' accurate,
There' are other explanations
of his refusal of ennoblement.
Deer Hunters
Need Patience
••••• • Nt
Whether you get a good shot
at a deer or not is largely up"to
yen as .a hunter. The first thing
to remember—and this goes for
experienced as well'as• the tyro
hunter—is not to beeerne dis-
c0uraged too quickly,
We are all, prone to accept the
feeling that there IS a 'dearth of
deer simply because we do not
see one, or signs ,of one, during
the first few hours of hunting.
After the first couple of days,
the feeling grows, This creeping *
negativism breeds careless hunt-
ing, and careless hunting won't
help reduce the country's ex-
ploding . deer population. So,
don't give up too. soon.
It helps to know something
about ear and deer bunting.
First of all, there is the question
of a suitable weapon. This is
easy, for there are a number of
suitable and entirely adequate
guns excellent for deer. The
most important thing is to get
one you like. anci.,,gan
From what I have been 4'alift'
to learn, most of the deer are
taken within 100-yard range. In
the East,"' the • range Iseernsc,,to
average closer to 75 yards, In'
the West, I would say that the
average runs a hit higher because
you can genaally see• farther,
and more long-range shots,,are
made,
Tip to about 75 yards, the shot-
gun loaded with .slugs is .a suit-
able weapon. 'Where, the law al: '"
lows, I prefer, to carry a rifle,
since with that, I'M equipped for
long and short range. A. proper,7
ly sighted slug, shot from a, shot-
gun epipped with sights; will
.give-you , three- to 5-inch group-
. ings at 0 to 75 yards. This is
accuracy . enough: to More than
do the job, *however. •
An important feature in a deer
rifle, to my way if thinking, is
lightness.- You ,can now. get a
.light weapon .,(between 61/4 and
7 ,pounds) in, various style of acr
tions—including the belt action.
A rifle which is slim'' at the bal-
ance point, where you grip it for
a ,one,..hand,.carry, lessens the fa,
tigue„in weapon; more ,
bolt-actions are being made with
slimness in mind.
YOU' can be 'fussy about` your
'aininuniticin and bullets. A lot
of us are,- because. we are al-
waysstriving,fer better accuracy
,aucl 'superior performance, , in
general. However, when you'
take. a° quick bead on a deer at
"say, 100 'yards, it doesn't make a
"whole lot of difference I've yet
hav,p a, sporting, bullet 'fail to
.clown a deer within a few feet
if't hit,it in a vital spot.'
Yotir principal problem is see-
ing the deer under favorable con-
ditions for a good shot and then
placing that shot effectively.
Where the hunter most frequent-
ly, fails is in not seeing the, deer
under proper shooting Condi-
tions. I'm no exception, and I
'don't, know anyone who is. I've
yet to see the hunter who knows
all the answers where deer are
concerned and who can give you
a sure-fire formula for outwit-
ting a deer every time.
The important thing to ,keep
in minc,, as far as your deer gun
is concerned, is to get a gun you
know and like. Confidence in
your weapon grows out of ex-
perience; and the swift, sure shot
with an old ,gun is miles better
than several miscalculated blasts
*with the most modern imple,-
ment made. It, is also helpful to
study up on deer habits and
consequently ,your habiti in the
. deer woods. Then plan accord-
ingly.
In my opinion, stalking is one
of the greatest of satisfactions in
hunting, Out in the West, there
is greater opportunity for stalk-
ing. Here, generally speaking, it
is possible 'to see deer at greater
ranges — ranges at which you
have a better change of seeing
them .first.
The amazing thing to me about
deer hunting is the high pitch
of excitement that it maintains.
Of course, you don't go into the
woods panting with anticipation
and keep it up for a week. It's
more likely your excitement
comes and goes in rolling waves.
But the least hint of ganie, the
smallest suspicion the , moment
is at hand is enough to send
your heart pumping,
Even assuming there are num-
erous fine bucks in your terra-
Cory, there is a good possibility
yea Won't see cite the first day.
If you do, 'there is still the pos.
sibility that you 'can't get Off a
good shot. Hitt 'don't become
discouraged; don't give ,up tad
quickly, but keep On tryilig,—By
