Legion Ladies organize in 1946
By Kaye Duncan
The Ladies Auxiliary to the
Royal Canadian Legion was
formed ;n April 1946. Their
Motto is "Service at all
times." Comrade Pegg,
Provincial Officer, installed
the new members. The first
year there was a membership
of 48. Of these members, only
three Charter members re-
main — Corn. Kay 1;h;rican,
Com. Bertha Elliott, Corn.
Elsie Shaw. Other members
who have been in the Auxil-
iary for 35 years are Corn.
Kitty Rutledge, Corn. Maggie
Rutledge, Corn. Verna Tun-
ney, Corn. Ann Baker.
Our first President was
Com. Verna Thomas - follow-
ed by Jean Leach, Annie
Gemmel!, Bertha Elliott,
Vera Hastings, Mary Lowe,
Kaye Duncan, Margaret
Stephenson, Pat Shaw, Mary
Storey, Helen Dobson,
Doreen Rutledge, Mabel Wil-
lis, Margaret Brewer, Gene-
vieve Dellow, Jean Bridge,
Joan Miller and the present
President. Grace Jutzi. Our
membership now is 50 mem-
bers and two life members.
Meetings were held in
various places such as the
Lib racy, Lodge Hall, Mem-
berg homes and the old Town
Hall where ow. present Le-
gion now stands.
RAISED MONEY
Money was raised by hav-
ing Teas, Bake sales, bazaars
selling Christmas cards, raffl-
ing off a quilt the members
made; also a booth when the
Legion held their annual
sports day in the Park.
In May, 1946 the Legion
purchased a building on Main
Street owned by Norman
Thompson.
As the building needed a
lot of renovating it was riot
available till January 1947.
Later the Legion gave the
Ladies Auxiliary the upstairs
for theirs rooms by taking out
partitions, laying a new floor,
furnishing a kitchen. The
rooms were large enough to
hold small banquets and card
parties. Christmas parties
were held by members and
their families. Garden Parties
were held on Vera Hastings
lawn with local talent for
entertainment.
In 1965, the Legion built a
new Legion Hall on the site of
the old Town Hall which we
are all very proud of. The
Ladies extended and furnish-
ed the kitchen. The rooms
being much larger gave us an
opportunity to cater to larger
banquets, wedding recep-
tions and anniversarys.
HELPED PAY MORTGAGE
In 1974, the ladies
Auxiliary were able to help
the men pay off the mortgage
on the building. We have'
adopted two veterans at West-
min ster Campus and remem-
ber them on their birthdays,
Christmas and throughout
the year.
We donate to several
organizations and Bursary
Fund. We participate in
Church parade with the men
on D. Day, Remembrance
Day and Decoration Day to
the cemetery to remember
our fallen comrades.
The Auxiliary enjoys the
comradeship of other bran-
ches in tournaments of darts,
cribbage and euchre.
