A10 THE BRUSSELS POST, AUGUST-5 1981
A busy .Callander summer
BY JAMS ACHESON
I am happy to report that, thanks to our
many community volunteers and our enthu-
siastic staff, our residents have been engaged
in many activities so far this summer.
June birthdays were celebrated with the
Belgrave Institute ladies who showed some
lovely slides to a captivated audience.
Afterwards, there was a sing-song and then
the ladies served refreshments. Mrs. Annie
Griffith, Mabel Montgomery, Charles Buck
and Ed Pollard all celebrated their birthdays
in June.
In mid-June, The East Wawanosh Glee
Club, consisting of 64 members, lined the
walls of the Home and sang a variety of songs;
for the residents, They are very good
singers and everyone enjoyed listening to
them. On the 20th of June, we held our
annual Open House. Gordon Harrison, and
his friend Francis entertained our residents
and their visitors. With Gordon playing the
piano and Francis on the guitar, they were an
unbeatable combination and everyone en-
joyed them thoroughly. The refreshments,
supplied by the Brussels Majestic Institute,
were delicious and were served by volunteers
from the 1st Brussels, Brownies and Guides.
Wendy Heibein, a Pathfinder, co-ordinated
the student volunteers. Wasn't that a party!
Our Staff and Family Talent Night was very
successful, Brad. Campbell played some
classical guitar numbers and Marjorie
Campbell did a couple of Scottish National
Dance numbers, after which Debbie Camp-
bit played the piano. The actors and actresses
in our Staff Skit were: Cecil Moore, Laura
Fischer, Jim Moore, Donna. Lowes t Karen
Parker and Debbie Trollope. We are
expecting many offers from Hollywood to
pour int Betty Graber, Chris Graber and Ann
Kernaghan sang a number of songs with Ann
playing the guitar. Afterwards, there was an
old-fashioned sing-song and refreshments
were served.
BLYTH SINGERS
The Blyth Singers were hand on the 23rd to
sing some inspirational songs and the next
day Jack and Mary Bryans showed the
residents slides of their trip to Africa. That
evening, the Brussels United Church Women
put on a variety show at the Home. The show
was excellent and the tallents of the ladies
involved were very much appreciated.
Following this, refreshments were served
with the help of Lynn Taylor, a student
volunteer, On the 25th, Ethel and Alf Sutton
and. May Godden entertained everyone with
their beautiful singing.
After completing their musical program,
they encouraged everyone to join them in a
sing-song. While refreshments were being
served, Alf played the piano. Freda Pipe was
on hand the next day to entertain us with
some delightful piano music and Ida Evans
led the group singing. The informal and
friendly atmosphere were enjoyed by all,
Freda was back again on the 30th, this time
with Alice Brothers, and they played a
number of piano duets. These two ladies
really make our piano "come alive" with
their musical talents and are a welcome s light
in the. Home.
Our June bowling champs were:: Beatrice
Cardiff and Frank Dunn and the July trophy
winners were: Frank and Margaret Weir.
Our July birthday party was hosted by the
Ethel Institute who brought Ethel and A.11
Sutton to entertain. The Home was "full of
music" and afterwards the birthday gifts and
cake was distributed.
Not too long ago we had a picnic behind the
Home which was well-attended by our
residents, The afternoon unit of the Brussels
United Church Women and our kitchen staff
combined their talents to provide a delicious
lunch. The church ladies stayed afterwards to
chat with the residents.
On Tuesday, July 14th, many resident from
Brookhaven and. Callander Nursing Homes,
went on a bus trip to Hayfield, where they
were treated royally by Mr. Len Bannister
who is the owner of the Paul Bunyan Camp.
Upon arrival, the residents were served cold
drinks followed by a delicious lunch. Then
Mr, Bannister hosted a number of bingo
games, which everyone enjoyed very much.
Some residents spent the remainder of the
afternoon socializing, while others went
down to the lake. The weather for the trip was
perfect. Many thanks to all the staff and
volunteers for their assistance and a special
thanks to Mr. Bannister for his kindness.
