MARGARET MAY
[MAUNDERS] COATES
Funeral service were con-
ducted on Saturday, March
21, 1981 at the M.L. Watts
Funeral Home, Brussels
Chapel, Brussels, Ontario by
the Rev. Ralph King for the
late Margaret May (Maund-
ers) Coates who died after an
lengthy illness, March 18,
1981 in her 79th year.
Mrs. Coates was born in
Morris Township, daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs.
William Harvey Maunders,
July 16, 1902. When she was
four years of age, the family
moved to Bellevue, Idaho ;
where they lived for ten
years before returning in
1916 to the Brussels area.
On August 3, 1929, she
was united in marriage with
George Franklin Coates, the ,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
E. Coates of Seaforth, Ontar-
io. Mrs. Coates was a grad-
uate of Brussels Continuat-
ion School, Stratford Normal
School and, after teaching
locally, went on to obtain her
degree in Home Economics
from McDonald Institute in
Guelph. Prior to her mar
riage she taught home econ-
omics for the Toronto Board
of Education.
Mrs. Coates, a gold-
medalist in public speaking,
addrc ssed Women's Clubs
and "assisted her husband
who NN a--; principal of contin-
uation schools, with his stu-
dents' dramatic productions
and commencements in
Havelock, Lyndon and Pick-
ering,
In 1947, when the family
moved to Toronto, Mrs.
Coates devised and taught
the "Foods and Nutrition
Course" to Nursing Assis-
tants for the Board of Health.
As well, she instituted simil-
ar courses in Hamilton and
London, Ontario. She con-
tinued in this work until 1967.
Mrs. Coates was life mem-
ber of the Methodist and
later, United Church where
she taught Sunday School
and was an active member of
the womens' organizations,
Friends and relatives were
present from Toronto, Thun-
der Bay, Pickering, Bolton,
Guelph, London, Fergus,
Seaforth, Wingham, Luck-
now and Blyth.
The pallbearers were her,
two sons and four grandsons.
Interment was in Brussels
Cemetery.
Predeceased by her hus-
band and one sister, Mildred
(Mrs. Clarence Hollinger of
Blyth), Mrs. Coates is sur-
vived by her two sons: Dr.
W. Robert Coates of Thunder
Bay; Dr. Charles F. Coates,
London, Ontario; one daugh-
ter, Mrs. Yvonne Adams,
Scarborough; ten grand-
children, David, Mary Beth,
John Robert and Melissa
Coates; Cameron, Kimberly
and Leslie Coates; Michelle
(Mrs. S.D. Penrose of Kam-
loops, B.C.), Andrea and
Craig Adams and great-
grandchild, Christopher.

The highlight of the past
week was the visit by the
Grade Five pupils from the
Brussels
ladies at CWL
convention
Joanne Phelan and Caro-
line Kernaghan of St. Am-
brose parish were delegates
to the annual diocesan con-
vention held at Wheels Inn,
Chatham, May S and 6.
The diocesan director,
Rev. F. M. White, welcomed
the delegates. There was a
feeling of celebration
throughout the two days as
this year marks the 60th
anniversary of The Catholic
Women's League of Canada
and the 125th anniversary of
the Diocese of London.
There are 110 'councils in
the diocese and 97 of these
were represented with dele-
gates at the convention. The
theme of the convention was
Faith and Family.
Most Rev. M.A. Gervais
presented a talk on this
theme.
Mrs. David Bailey was
chairlady at a workshop
entitled The- Mentally Disa-
bled Child In the Family,
presented by the Chatham-
Kent Association for the
Mentally Retarded.
Conveners reports were
presented and adopted.
Elections for executive
were held and the officers
were installed during the
Mass which was celebrated
by Fr. M. White at Wheels
Inn.
Most Rev. James Doyle
the National Director, of the
C.W.L. was the speaker of
the banquet
Seaforth School, who spent
the day visiting and helping
the residents in various
ways.
A special Mother's Day
service was held in the
chapel on Sunday morning.
Mrs. Elsie Henderson sang a
solo accompanied by Frank
Bissett at the organ. The
congregation enjoyed two
solos by Mrs. Wittich. The
choir sang the anthem
Heaven Is Nearer Since
Mother Is There.
Marie Flynn, Stan Hillen,
Wilson McCartney, Lorne
Lawson, Ken Dale, and our
own Jim Ruddock contribut-
ed to the music at Old Tyme
Music on Monday afternoon.
Anglican Communion was
held in the chapel on Tues-
day afternoon. The van had
to go to Goderich on Tuesday
afternoon and Fran McLean,
Harry Philips, Verda Beck-
ler, Clayton Steel, Muriel
Gibson, and Ernest Appleton
went along for the ride and
enjoyed the scenery.
Preparations are being
made this week towards the
float entry for Klompen
Feest. We appreciate all the
extra work that the ladies in
the sewing room have done
towards 'the making of our
hats and aprons.
Day Care showed the 99
cent movie on Wednesday
afternoon called The Emper-
or Waltz staring Bing Crosby
Mrs, Prouty conducted Bi-
ble Study in the chapel, on
Thursday afternoon. Mass
was held at ten o'clock on
Friday morning and resi-
dents enjoyed Bingo on
Ground North on Friday
afternoon.
Sympathy is expressed to
the families of Mary Pining,
Jean Sheppard.

community response to the special problems of unemployed
