Al2 — THE BRUSSELS POST, MARCH l& 1981
Gorrie Red Cross began in 1914
One founder is 97 this year
Correspondent
MRS. GEORGE BROWN
335-3424
Gorrie Red Cross Branch
helped many since 1914.0n
October 26, 1914, the citizens
of Gorrie responded to an
urgent call for help for
Canadian soldiers who were
being sent overseas and for
contributionsIto'the Belguim
Relief Fund when Belguim
was overrun.
A public meeting was held
and canvassers were
appointed; this resulted in
$209. 65 being raised. The
money was divided equally
between the British Red
Cross and the Belgian Relief
Fund.
After the canvas another
meeting was called and a
committee formed from the
three churches to organize a
patriotic society. The only
original member of that
committee still living is
Harvey Sparling who
celebrating his 97th birthday
this year.
The new group would be
called Gorrie and District
Patriotic Society. The
Anglican T' "stcr at that
time was R,r.. W.H. Robarts.
Money had to be raised so
concerts, picnics, baseball
games, candy sales, suppers
and autographed quilts all
contributed to the cause.
Lotteries then were against
the law so many auctions
were held. The late J.C.
Thompson donated a sheep
to be auctioned. W '3. Strong
and E. James d I.nted calves
for auction.
One picnic raised $315.78
with (' expenditure of
$68.85 Among the money
raisers was a booth selling
five-cent ice cream cones.
The Teeswater Brass Band
came for $15. and their
railway fares. The Wingham
Ladies Baseball team played
Gorrie South Ladies. Once a
month special offerings were
taken in each of the three
churches. These averaged
bout $175. from the three
churches. Of course then
everyone supported the
church of their choice.
An appeal came from
Toronto for money to supply
soldiers-in-training with
rifles. About' $30.00 was
sent. The minutes of 1915
show that money was
donated to Huron County
Council. . . That
year Loyal Orange Lodges of
Howick gave $200. for relief
of wounded men. Five gross
of Union Jacks were sold at
the Howick Fair.
- In 1915 the Canadian Red
Cross was organized and that
year over $600. was sent to
the organization. The same
year the Women's Work
Committee was appointed,. A
collection of old books,
papers, rags etc. was made
and proceeds from this and
$100, made on an auto-
graphed quilt were used to
buy materials.
This patriotic soicety was
disbanded in 1920 two years
after World War I ended.
Everyone felt this was the
war that would end all wars
but greed and selfishness
.again reared heir ugly heads
and in 1939 Canada was
-again forced to defend the
free world. In January 1940.
Major Watson of the
Canadian Red Cross was
invited to Gorrie from a
branch of the society. A
committee was appointed
and on motion of Rev. John
Ball and Mrs. P. Kaine, the
name became Gorrie and
District Branch of the
Canadian Red Cross Society.
The first officers were
President Hartwell Strong;
Vice President E.W. Carson;
Treas. Ewart Whitfield;
Directors Norman Wade.
George A. Dane Sr.
Knowlson Hueston1 H. V.
Holmes and Harvey
Sparling. These men are all
deceased but Mr. Sparling.
On June 10, 1940 a 15 cent
Tea was served while ladies
of the community viewed the
display of the first bale ready
for shipping. The bale
contained 31 sheets1 13 quilts,
two blankets, six surgeons
gowns i 16 dozen towels and
masks,three dozen masks, 20
dozen gauze handkerchiefs,
29 hot water bag covers,
wristlets, handkerchiefs.
children nighties and dresses
etc.
Howicks allocation this
year is $1000. with Ontario
pledged to raise $5 million
Many people feel that Red
Cross activities have not
been necessary since war is
over. But Red Cross is people
helping people . The last
Howick canvas netted some
$800.
Approximately $600. of
that was spent right in
Howick, not including
salaries asall. who work for
the Red Cross are volunteers,
