proceed with preliminary engineering work,.
•on replacing the bridge on August 7, 1978
although they had talked about plans for
improving the bridge before that.
The new bridge was built to replace the
previous structure which had been built in '
1913 and, was necessary because of " the
increased traffic flow. While the load limit ,
on the old bridge was five tons, the new
structure will have a 100 ton capacity.
'in 1978, Dawson and Johnston,
ing Engineers of Stratford were retained as
engineers for the project. Final plans were
started in the spring of 1979, but there was, a
stop put on the work due to .financing
Plans were completed in the spring of
1980 and tenders called to close July 7', 19004
Moffatt and White COnstynction Ltd,, of
Stratford, had the loWest of seven tender bids
at $359,000. With engineering bills, the
purchase of some land necessary for the
contruction and landscaping, the price of th
projeet became' $400,000- -
Construction began in mid,July and the
project was completed November 15, 1980
- with some minor work, left to be done in the
' spring of .1981.
The new Martin's bridge is approximately,
6 feet high. Its total length is 265 feet. It is 30
feet wide with 24 feet for traffic and there is
approximately 15 feet under the bridge for
the water flow.
Approxima t:ely 700 cubic yards of concrete
were used in the. bridge with approximately
53 'tons of reinforcing steel. Negotiations
were made with Ontario Hydro to move lines
and with a land owner to provide an area for
problems. construction.

For many farmers, equity
growth has come as a result
of inflation rather than real
operating profits. Part of the
'blame for this must lie with
those advisers who en-
courage borrowers to look
only at "present market
values" rather than "book
values".
WHAT ABOUT THE EXIST-

With interest rates chang-
ing weekly, it is hard to make

probably be best to• tie down
interest rates where possi-
ble, as opposed to letting
them float.
Many hog and beef farm-
ers can testify to the pain of
interest rates that floated up
with the prime rate this past
spring. The hog. and beef
markets were both getting a
"wringing out" in the mark-
et, place, when interest rates
