THE BRUSSELS POST, MARCH 12, OM 15
ar
are
women
important
BY JACK HAGARTY
The. best, resource in
agriculture - is the farm
people themselves. I be-
lieve it,. Corporate farms
have not taken over agri-
culture. The family farm
offers competition that's
just too tough.
I'm wondering if we
might make that compe-
tition even tougher, I'm
talking about farm women
being more involved in,
farm management. That's
a force to be reckoned
with. Can't you see those
corporate executives throw-
ing up their hands in dis-
gust and saying "that
does it - that's the last
straw. A husband-wife
-management team! We'd
best fold our tent and
move on. We can't supply
that kind of balanced
expertise."
Mr. and MrS. Heming-
way of north Huron
County recently presented
a joint talk at the Water-
loo Wellington Swine
Conference. She's a grad-
uate from the Animal
Health Technology Course
and he's a graduate of the
Agricultural Business
Management Course at
Centralia College of Agri-
cultural Technology. They
work as a management
team. Each has their
special farm responsibilities
She controls the herd
health. You can be, sure
everyone in the audience
listened. And women felt a
sense of pride.
I've noticed that young
farm wives are very inter-
ested in the. business of
asset transfer and business
agreements. On, three
occasions lately, they've
been involved in the coun-
selling sessions. They had
off-farm business experi-
ence in banking or capital
cost allowance. They asked
very good questions. And
they sent me to the filing
cabinet searching for
answers - that's good •
embarrassing - but in the
long run, we all benefit.
Should we offer some
courses primarily for farm
women? It's being done in
some areas. The women
say it lets 'them ask all
kinds of questions - that

men might, think stupid.
Following the courses, the
comment from the instruc-
tor, usually is "Wow, what
good questions - some of
those things never oc-
curred to me." It just
could be that many things
in farm management are
not thought of because
we've ignored the women's
point of view.
Farm women are invited
to participate in all OMAF
programs. 'Wouldn't it be
great to see many 'farm
women attending the edu-
cational sessions? Those
.corporate executives would
see the writing on the wall
- ',farm families are here
to stay."
Beirnes. Birthday Prize -
Thelma Keffer and Adrian
Verstrop. Lucky Cup - Isabel
Bremner.
Mr. and Mrs., Wm.
Dobson have returned home
