$1000 in meat
stolen here
Somebody gave himself a very expensive
Christmas gift at no cost (unless his
conscience is pricking him with guilt). The-
thief who broke into the Th9mpson and.
Stephenson abattoir chose to ignore hanging
sides of meat and gathered up for himself
the cut and wrapped parcels of meat, all ready
to be stored in a freezer. Selective, was he
not? What will he be thinking when that
meat is served at his table? Most folks, We
believe, would choke on it. Expensive as
meat, along with :most food, is the majority
of folks would rather do without than obtain
it such a way.

When you think about a Fashion Show you
picture lean and hungry looking professional
models displaying clothes that would look:
smart on slim young women. Those styles
that would look somewhat ridiculous on we
senior citizens. There is going to be quite a
different fashion show held here. The
Callander Nursing Home will present a
Caravan Clothes Fashion Show at the Home
in the afternoon of December 18th. It will be
the residents who will model "clothes for the
elderly.," Now that will be an interesting and
worthwhile fashion show to see. People are •
welcome to attend.

The Toronto Maple Leafs did it! They did
it at last! They scored a 3-2 victory over the
Montreal Habs in the Wednesday night
game last week, giving them an undefeated
5-game streak. Even Montreal's awesome
power play was twice failed by Palmeteer.
Unfortunately the New York Islanders, who
had been in a long slump, came to life
Saturday 'night and with the superb per-
formance.of goalie Glen Presch, snapped the
Leaf's winning streak with a 6-1 win.

Be careful with lighters! Did • you know
that lighters are dangeroUs? People were
told at a news conference in Manitoba that
disposable butane lightersThave the explo-,
give force of three sticks of 'dynamite. Two
men. in the U.S. were killed when their
butane lighters were struck by welding
sparks. Other dispogable lighters have also
been declared hazardous under the Hazard-
. ous Products Act. They have the dangerOus
fault of too high flame-or sudden spurting
flame. People have reported burns to face
and hands., Take care when using a lighter.

Almost unbelievable things are possible
when one has the patience to persist in the
training of animals. A cat trained to use the
bathroom toilet! That would certainly be
thought unbelievable. Yet there it was. A
pidutre, in a recent paper, showing the cat
doing just that, proof that it was an
accomplished fact. How nice it would be if I
had the intelligence and persistent patience
to train my dog Sheba to do the same. Then
there would be no need (sneaking around my
yard when the neighbours are away) to clean
up her leavingg. Thati I fear, is beyond me,
though it may be Sheba has.the intelligence.
Approximately $1,000 in cut and prepared
meat was stolen from the Thompson and
Stephenson Abbatoir in Brussels sometime
early Saturday morning.
Fred Stephenson a partner in the business
said the outside door had been pried open
with a tire iron which the thieves left there.
They then went into the fast freezer stealing
hindquarters, front quarters and almost
every kind of meat including beef, pork and

The meeting of the Walton Area Sports
Club to decide what to do about the Walton
library and a community centre for the area
came to few conclusions on Thursday night
except that it was decided more information
should be obtained.
Approximately 30 . people attended the
meeting at the Walton Community Hall
where various types of buildings for the
combined community centre-library were
discussed.
Chairman Doug Kirkby explained that at
the last meeting a 12 x 24 insulated building
for the library had been discussed and that
they had an estimate for that building of
$15,000 for material and hiring a contractor
to build it was estimated at $7,000.
At that meeting, he said it was also
suggested looking into a two storey building.
This would still give the library almost 400
square feet, he said:
They had obtained a quote for this type
building which would be approximately 20 x
40 and two storeys high. The upstairs was
designed to include cloakroom and men and
Christmas is coming fast
and already the deadlines for
news and copy have been set.
Advertising and copy for the
ristmas issue of
December 19 is Monday,
chicken worth approximately $1,000.
Also taken from the abbatoir was a rifle
which is sometimes used for shooting cattle.
It was about 9 a.m. on Saturday when the
incident was discovered. Meat that was
hanging up but not cut and already prepared
for the freezer wasn't stolen Mr. Stephenson
said.
Wingham O.P.P. are investigating the
incident.
women's washrooms and downstairs there
would be men and women's washrooms, a
lunch counter, a stairway to the upstairs and
there would also be a staircase outside. The
estimated cost on this building was $29,500.
Mr. Kirkby also told the audience that
Melanie McLachlan of Hanover said she
would come to a meeting and talk about the
grants that were available to them.
kcommunity centre grant of 25 per cent is
available and the rest of the money is raised
locally. No Wintario grants are available for
it. •
He said that Morris council had said they
would put money into the building if there
was a library in it. The builders would have
to estimate the cost of the library separately,
Mr. Kirkby said.
Mr. Kirkby also said that the library would
pay so much rent per square foot and it
would mean a little bit of money for the
building every year.
Following approval of a motion to make
the building a one-storey building, Alan
Campbell, Reeve of McKillop wanted to

The Christmas Spirit has been much in
evidence this past week, or more. A number
of the residents of our village have decked
their homes indoors and outdoors with
lighted Christmas displays. Business win-
dows along the main street are bright with a
variety of Christmas arrangements. All
giving an attractive cheery Christmas atmo-
sphere for folks bustling 'about on holiday
season errands. From the kitchens of busy
ladies, preparing for Chrigtmas entertaining
comes the fragrant aroma of holiday goodies
baking.
