Our Brownies have adopted a Foster Child, Prima Sandi of Bolivia. The silver collection 'received at this concert will go to help provide the things that Prima Sandi must have to grow up strong and healthy. It will also help in the support of her family. The Brownies are to be commended for this endeavour. Plan to attend the concert and help them in their good deed. * * * * * * In spite of the increased postage rates We have had in the past, mail service leaves a lot to be desired. In some cases it is downright ridiculous. From personal experience I know that a letter mailed in Brussels in time for the late afternoon dispatch on Monday was not delivered in Mississauga until Friday. (The delay I am certain did not take place in the Brussels Post Office.) Pony Express or even Carrier Pigeon would have done better than that. Is there any hope that we will ever have efficient postal service? * * * * * * Dr. Tom Pashby believes that organized amateur hockey in leagues is more danger- ous than casual games. He should know something about it. He has been treating hockey injuries for over thirty years and has been active in coaching amateur hockey Morris Township council decided to adopt Section 86 tax assessment at a special council meeting on Thursday night, follow- ing a presentation by Ted East and Gerald Morgan of the regional assessment office in Goderich on what the new assessment would mean for the township. Council was told that open houses would be held with assessors and farm assessors to answer any questions township people have on the new assessment. In the residential class, 136 Morris units will get a reduction in tat assessment -While 180 units Will inerease, Commercial.. property assessment also players. He feels too, many coaches in organized hockey promote the "win at any cost" attitude. The kids are told to play rough. It does not seem to matter how rough as long as they win. This inevitably leads to injuries. Players in casual games, Dr. Pashby believes, are safer for the games are more for fun and there is not the pressure to win. It is time coaches, yes, and some parents also, stop encouraging their young players to play to win no matter what the cost to themselves or others. * * * * * * Senator Edward Kennedy, who has offic- ially declared his intention to challenge President Carter for the leadership of his party and candidate for president, must be a very courageous man dedicated to do what he feels is his duty to his country, or a very foolhardy one. With two brothers the victims of assassins he must realize the dangers he is courting. What about the Kennedy family? They must be very apprehensive about the fate that may await him. Is it right that he should follow in the footsteps of his brothers and subject his family to the strain of anxiety with which they must surely live in the days to come. * * * * * * Feel sluggish when you wake in the morning? Take a close look at your cat or dog when they wake up. They stretch. With front legs extended forward as far as possible they stretch, s-t-r-e-t-c:h every muscle in their body often finishing off with a vigorous shake. Try it tomorrow morning, the stretching, maybe not the vigorous shake. It sure does wake one up and ready to go. The trouble with me is I am not at all keen on being ready to go first thing in the morning. I prefer a leisurely cup of coffee before I start to get going. ****** Tut! Tut! Those naughty Trudeaus. First it was Margaret with her unseemly antics. Now Pierre has had to be chastised by his fellow Liberals for being a bad boy. He dodged a political gathering in B.C. pleading a cold. Then his picture appeared with him disco-dancing with a blonde in New York at the very time he should have been at that meeting. Naughty, naughty Pierre. includes the business assessment. In Morris Township, in the commercial class, 15 units will come down and 14 will go up in their tax assessment. In the farm class, 72 per cent will have little change, 14 per cent will go up and 14 per cent down. About 25 or 33 farms are going to have tax changes of over $100 per farm, Mr. Morgan told council members. Prior to council deciding to adopt the Section 86 assessment, there was some discussion of the possibility that people might confuse the Secticin 86 assessment with the proposed equalization factor which council has decided to appeal. About 80 ladies from the Brussels and (neighbouring Women's Institutes met in the Brussels Public. School Wednesday night to. ;celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Majestic Women's Institute. WI members were present from Ethel, Bluevale, Walton,' Moncrieff, Molesworth, Cranbrook, Gorrie, Wroxeter, Fordwich and Lakelet. Dorothy Steffler, President, introduced the Majestic Stompers who stomped out a few good songs. The Motto - "The home is the first school and the parent is the first teacher" was prepared by Leona Armstrong and presented by Kate Wilson, the conven- ers of this Family and Consumer Affairs meeting. A lively dance duet featuring Down-East Stepping by Leanne Armstrong and Carla King was enjoyed. Doris. McCall introduced the guest speak- er - Don Keillor from the Huron Centre for Children & Youth, a centre for emotionally disturbed children. Mr. Keillor said he was greatly taken by several posters hanging in the school, made by the pupils in connection with "The International Year of the Child". One Brussels council, at a meeting on Wed- nesday night, decided to proceed with tax reassessment after meeting with .Ted East and Don Tofflemeir from the regional assessment office in Goderich. Council was presented with an impact report to show what the changes would be for the village. Council was told that there would be $555 less residential assessment than before. 173 residential units will show a decrease in tax assessment under the new system while 250 show an increase. These figures are based on units not properties as a property could have more than one taxable unit on it. In the commercial class which included 109 units, the total of the old was $295,185 while the new assessment would be $304,430 That would mean an average increase of $17 for a commercial unit. In the commercial class, 80 properties show a decrease while 29 increase. "The old assessment and the new Jim Prior of Brussels was recently presented with the "Mike" Weichel given for outstanding efforts in sports, at a W.O.A.A. Meeting in Wingham. Each year the W.O.A.A. presents the trophy to some- one in the Western Ontario region. In presenting this trophy to the W.O.A.A., it was Mr. Weichel's desire to ensure that the personnel in this area, be recognized and rewarded for their outstand- ing efforts in minor sports. Mr. Weichel of Elmira donated this trophy to the W.O.A.A. in 1953 and it has been presented annually since that times Each community is requested to submit the name or name of people whom they, judge to be worthy selects the person or persons they consider to be worthy. Brussels Minor Hockey particular poster with the caption "Please give us love" was mentioned by Mr. Keillor, as love is one of the key things that children need; but not just children - people also need love. Mr. Keillor referred to 1st Corinthians 13:11 - "I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child." Mr:IC.4111pr said it is alright as adults to still thinIC,as'a child and speak as a child at times, becduse we never really lose that trait of our childhood. He said it is important to make it okay for children to be children. It is easy to understand children by looking inside Of ourselves and see what we really need. Mr. Keillor said that adults' pressures and worries have a great effect on a child - mostly a child doesn't understand why the adult is acting differently. The most import- ant relationship in a child's life is the relationship between his mom and dad. A parent finds it hard to be a good parent if he or she is not loved by their spouse. You have to be loved in order to give love. Children need a feeling they are being loved (Continued on Page 3 ) 'ESTABLISHED 1872 'assessment (on commercial property) in- icludes business assessment," Mr. Toffle- 'meir told council. The village only had one property in the industrial class and there were no changes in that. In Class 7, the farming class which includes vacant lands which are used for farming purposes, the rates of abutting land were applied. Brussels had 13 farmland units and the old and the new assessment for them was about the same council was told. 57 properties were assessed within 80 to 89 per cent of the 1975 property value, and 42 per cent of the properties were within 20 per cent of being right on. The rest were under or overassessed, Mr. Tofflemeir said. Open houses will be held At the same meeting, council made their appointments to the Medical-Dental Centre Board,— appointing Jim Cardiff for three years, Hugh Pearson for two years and Jack Bryans for one year.
