Directory matures historic telephones f , . • •
A colorful panorama of
telephones used during the
,last century is featured on
the cover of the 1979 Strat-
ford and surrounding area
telephone directory.
Peter Croome, local Bell
manager, said Bell is mark-
ing its 100th anniversary on
April 29, 1980. The phones,
in full color against a grey
background, range from the
early wooden box and hand-
set to the modern Content-
pra.
On the inside back cover is
a brief message explaining
the cover design and listing
the years when the 12 tele-
phones pictured were intro-
duced.
Some 31,000 copies of the
new directory will be de-
livered, beginning August
16, Mr. Croome said. This is
about 3,000 more than last
year.
Sweet corn
makes a
tasty treat
Fresh Ontario sweet corn
is on the market now,
available from local food
stores, roadside markets,
and pick-your-own farms.
Treat yourself to corn-on-the-
cob often during the season,
which continues through
August until the end of
September.
To fully enjoy the delicious
flavor and tenderness of
sweet corn, food specialists
at the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food remind
ushbw important it is to eat
corn as soon after picking or
purchasing as possible. In
just 24 hours after picking,
corn can lose up to 50 percent
of its sugar. So refrigerate
the corn and plan to use it the
day you buy it. If it is
absolutely necessary to store
corn, keep it in the re-
frigerator with the husks on
and use it the next day.
Food specialists suggest a
couple of things to watch for
to determine the freshness of
the corn before you buy it.
Choose cobs that have fresh-
looking green outer husks
and dry silks. As the corn
gets older, the silk will start
:o fall out. It isn't necessary
:o peel back the husk of the
:ob to determine the
naturity of the corn. Just
cold the cob tightly at the silk
;nd, which is the last part of
he ear to mature. If the corn
s ready, you will be able to
eel the firm large kernels
hrough the husk.
The last step before
inking your teeth into the
ender, sweet corn is to cook
t to perfection. All it takes is
to 7 minutes for medium -
o large-size cobs in boiling
Valet. Longer cooking
oughens the kernels. tte-
dove the cobs from the water
s soon as they're cooked.
'hey will become water-
oaked and lose flavor if left
