The first scene of the play starts off slowly but by the second and third acts, the pace has picked up consider- ably and the comical mo- ments seem no longer to depend so much on innuendo as they do on the funny situations the characters find themselves in. The story takes place in the home of the Reverend Lionel Toop and his . wife Penelope. Rev. Toop abhors gambling in any shape or form and Penelope has just learned from the maid Ida and the maid's boyfriend that they and she just may have won a fortune playing the London football pools. Penelope thought she was merely playing the local pools and that the money was going towards a worthy cause. But before and after Penelope tries to figure out how she will tell her husband about her possible good fortune, many different crises plunge the characters into a comical chain of events. These include an elderly spinster's designs on the Rev. Toop, the maid's La Leche League in Huron County held the first of a series of four meetings in Exeter at the home of Mrs. R. Graham. The topic of discussion was the "Benefits of Breastfeeding to Mother and Child." Many mothers, mothers-to-be and babies were welcomed by Mrs. P. Bisback, the leader The enthusiasm of the mothers for breastfeeding was evident, as they listed all the benefits they could think of, such as being inexpensive, saving on time spent in the kitchen, having a happy baby, taking time to enjoy the children, building a closeness with family, and a Beef Congress The first Ontario Beef Cognress organized by the Ontario Cattlemen's Association will be held July 18 and 19 at the Western Fair Grounds in London. Although the congress has been primarily designed as an information session for beef producers, it offers something for everyone from the maufacturer of livestock supplies to the urban beef consumer. A two-day program of lectures, seminars and dis- cussions has been prepared for beef farmers on the overall theme of 'Facing the Future Profitably'. In spite of fairer prices for beef re- cently, farmers must still apply top management and Modern techniques to ensure profits. The accompanying trade show and beef breed displays feature exhibits by over 120 companies and breed associations to provide an interesting time for anyone boyfriend, who gets excited when he thinks he may have lost his form with his lucky numbers on it, the visit of the Reverend Arthur Humphrey who is to take over services for Rev.Toop who has injured his leg falling over the spinster's bicyle, and a visit from Penelope Toop's uncle, The Bishop of Lax, who is thoroughly baffled by the scenes he finds around him when he pays a visit to the Toop's home. As previously mentioned, the cast is one of the play's stronger points and one of the main people giving the play that strength was Trudy Cameron in her portrayal of Penelope Toop, the wife of the Reverend, who must contend with what may be her sudden windfall in the football pools, the elderly spinster who is after her husband and trying to keep everybody happy when utter chaos hits the household. Stanley Coles as the Rev. Lionel Toop gives a fine performance as the complete opposite to his wife—strictly conservative, a man who finds himself trapped bet- ween dealing with his more liberal wife, the maid, and Miss Skillon, the spinster lady who is always after him. One performance that real- ly deserves mention is that of Jay MacDonald as Pene- lope's uncle, The Bishop of Lax. Although it's only a ready source of comfort during sickness or teething. Everyone was especially in- terested in saving money, and saw that nursing meant no unnecessary purchases of infant foods, later intro- duction of solids, and only an additional snack for mother of 400 calories - such as a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk. Mothers learned that breastfeeding is good in- surance. Many babies are so healthy because human milk is naturally suited to their digestive system, as well as providing immunities against colds, infections, and aller- gies. on in July interested in the beef business. Consumers are we- lcome to attend to learn the ins and outs of raising beef and be exposed to the farmers' side of the beef supply/price issue. For those attending on Wednesday, July 18, a high- light of the day will be a beef barbecue at 6 p.m. sponsored by the Ontario Cattlemen's Association featuring all the beef you can eat for $5.95. Tickets for the four speaker sessions (morning and afternoon each day) are $5.00 each in advance. Ad- mission to the trade show in the Progress Building is free with advance speaker tickets or $2.00 at the door. Advance tickets are available from local county Cattlemen's Associatons or from The Ontario Cattlemen's Association - Beef Congress, 590 Keels Street, Toronto, Ontario M6N 3E3. Jennifer Austin is good in her role as Hi everyone! It's Rocky Raccoon and I'm back to keep you informed of what your Conservation Au- thority is doing. The people in the Authority's office are busy all year round, but the lands technician and his crew were especially busy during the month of May. That's because they were planting trees for the watershed's landowners, This is called reforestation. When re- foresting land, you must first decide which areas need planting. These areas are usually erosion problems, land on which natural re- generation has failed to take place, or land which is unsuitable for a worthwhile crop yield. The choice of the species of tree which you plant depends upon the environment and the tree's future use. The actual plant- ing of the trees can be done by either hand or machine. Hand planting can be done by the wedge method, the slit method, or the T- method. Of course, reforesting a 100 The colostrum which the baby receives for the first while contains 30 ingred- ients to nourish and sustain growth, many of which can not be duplicated. The breastmilk also maintains a level of immunity for I he baby throughout the nursing per- iod. In 1978, the Canadian and American Pediatric Soc- iety issued a joint statement reaffirming that human milk is the superior nutrition suited to baby's needs up to six months of age. Following the discussion, TUES.& WED., JULY 3, 4 James Stewart, Mickey Rooney and Alice Faye, Starring in THE MAGIC OF LASSIE — AND — BENJI Children's Admission 25c the flighty maid Ida, Peter Millard gives a good offbeat performance of the maid's boyfriend Willie Briggs whose main vocabularly con- sists of saying Arrr! as does Jenny Turner portraying the acre field by any of these methods would be a long not to mention backbreaking job. Therefore, major re- forestation projects are done by machine. The Authority is also concerned with the manage- ment of the trees after planting. In a plantation or woodlot, this will include "thinning", which is removing young trees as they grow to allow for proper development of the crowns and trunks of the remaining trees. The wood from these thinnings can be used for fuel or pulpwood. "Pruning" is also done and it entails cutting the lower branches of the trees off so it will produce clear, knot-free wood. The branches removed are called "slash" and can be dragged together in piles to form homes for the wildlife. 'Cho Jenefits offered by this foist cover are many, but can mainly be summarized under erosion control, water conservation, wood production, recreation, and Mrs. B. Billson explained how the League's lending library works. Books and pamphlets may be signed out for up to a month. Some mailing is done to those in the country. The mothers had time to peruse the library and socialize. Because two members of the LLL group will be attend- ing the Seventh international Conference of La Leche League in Atlanta, Georgia, the next meeting will be held a week later than usual, 18th. Many pests can destroy or do severe damage to a reforested area. Some of the Wawanosh Conservation Area which was just re- forested this spring was damaged by groundhogs. The seedling white pines had their tops either nipped completely off or some part of the tree bitten into. Another Ontario pest is the Pine Grosbeak which feeds upon the terminal and lateral buds of the Scotch Pine. A single year's feeding can reduce the year's tree harvest by 50%. For farmers, the common cow can pose a threat if a herd is allowed to graze in a woodlot. The cows not only kill the small seedlings necessary for natural re- forestation, but also damage the roots of the trees and predictable, the fine cast does much to renew old sight gags and it's a play that is fun to go see just for an evening of relaxing enter- tainment. Classified Ads pay dividends compact the soil so that new seeds cannot grow in it. By taking a few precautionary steps, these hazards may be avoided. In the early 1960's, MVCA initiated a reforestation assistance program for any private landowner within the watershed. The reforestation program is fluorishing as more and more landowners receive assistance from the Conservation Authority. The program offers 3 types of planting services: hand planting, machine planting and a tree planting subsidy. Windbreak assistance is also available. Applications for fall plantings must be forwarded to the Authority not later than July 1st of the year of planing, and for spring plantings, no later than Sept. 1 st of the year prior THURS., FRI., SAT., JULY 5, 6, 7 REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER —PLUS— Kris Krittofferson; Ali MacGraw and Ernest Borgnine, in CONVOY [Adult Entertainnientj La Leche League meets in Exeter Lists breast feeding benefits Rocky Racoon of MVCA Suggests tree planting
