J.M. McDonald Lumber
Ltd. of Brussels is
celebrating 50 years of
service to the public. Special
selling events are planned
commencing Thursday and
on Saturday the public is
invited to be guests at a
barbecue on the premises.
The business was
originally founded in the
spring of 1929 by Duncan N.
McDonald and John A.
Crerar and was known as
Crerar and McDonald
Lumber and Coal. Mr. Crerar
sold his interests to Mr.
McDonald in 1942 and in that
same year J. M. (Jack)
McDonald started with his
father D.N. -McDonald. He
became a partner in 1944 and
in 1957 purchased the re-
maining interests from his
father. It was at this time
that the business was
incorporated under the name
J.M. McDonald Lumber
Limited.
While Mcdonald's has
always occupied the same
location increasing business
through the years has
resulted in greatly expanded
accommodation as compared
to early days. Now a total of
16,000 square feet of
showroom space accom-
modates the wide line
of building supplies which
the company carries.
Almost all the lumber
stock is stored inside in
sheds on the property.
McDonald's have kept
pace with the times and as
demands changed have
moved to provide what the
public wants. The company
operates probably one of the
largest yards in rural
Western Ontario.
"It has grown into a home
centre concept," Mr.
McDonald said.
In 1964, the company
•
became shareholders in
Allont Limited of Toronto,
which is owned and operated
by independent retail lumber
and building supply dealers
McDonalds. Buildall is a
family business with the
family of Jack McDonald
actively involved. They
include J.M. McDonald, Neil
T. McDonald, Paul D.
McDonald, John W.
McDonald and Gail J.
McDonald.
We've taken
a new look at
Ontario's PlanningAd.
For land's sake.
Land. Ontario has over one
million square kilometres of
it. It's important to all of
us that every kilometre is put
to the .best possible use, now and
in the future.
That's why Ontario has a Planning
Act. It's the legal framework that
determines how land should be used,
and in what form development should
take place.
Under the present Act, munici-
palities wishing to pass bylaws
relating to the use of land go to the
Ontario Municipal Board for
provincial approval..
In recent years, however,
the provincial government's role in
municipal planning has been
changing. A committee established
in 1975 took a close look at the
Planning Act to see how it could
be adapted to suit the changing
needs of the municipalities as
well as to make the procedures
more efficient.
After getting reaction to the
report of the Planning Act Review
Committee, the government has
now produced the White Paper
outlining its position on
revising the Act.
The main proposals are:
o The province would place
more emphasis on advice and assis-
tance than on its current role of
supervising and approving local
planning decisions.
o Municipalities, where appropriate,
would be given autonomy to ,make
planning decisions.This will apply to
municipalities which have the resources
and capabilities to handle increased
planning responsibility
o The public would have better
access into the planning process.
Municipalities will have to extend
public notification procedures to
people who will be affected by
planning decisions.
o To speed up the process,
the Ontario Municipal Board would
act only as an appeals body
A copy of the White Paper
has been made available to
municipalities, planning boards
and other interested groups.
