Fireplace adds beauty, warmth
What's' a relatively easy
remodeling project that can
add charm and comfort to
your home and increase its
value at the same time?
The answer: adding a fire-
place.
A recent home-builders'
poll rated fireplaces among
the top four features home
buyers insist on, so a fire-
place makes a good invest-
ment in your home's resale
value, while making it a
cozier place to- live right
now.
If this winter caught you
longing for a crackling
blaze, plan now to add your
fireplace during the warm
months ahead. Ease of in-
stallation makes it possible
to add a factory-built fire-
place to virtually any room
in the house — the living
room, the family room, the
bedroom, even the kitchen.
In fact, there's a trend
toward two and even three
fireplaces throughout the
house, wherever people
gather.
Installing a fireplace is
easier than you think, with
one of the many factory-
built fireplaces available to-
day. Because they come
ready-to-install, factory-
built fireplaces spare you the
cost and inconvenience of
extensive remodeling needed
to add a' conventional
masonry unit — not to men-
tion the fact that skilled
masons are hard to find in
many parts of the country.
And, factory-engineered
units offer greater assurance
of quality, since the per-
formance of a masonry fire-
place depends on the talents
of the individual mason,
"Zero-clearance" is the
key phrase in understand-
ing the advantages' of a
built-in, factory-built fire-
place Over conventional
masonry units. Zero-clear-
l ance means that the fire-
place may be safely in-
stalled on or against exist-
ing walls and floors — no
need to knock out walls, do
extensive remodeling or
build a special foundation.
Safety is another point in
favor of factory construc-
tion. Check for the U.L.
or other safety-approved
label when you buy.
Looking for the old-
fashioned warmth of a
wood-burning stove? These
trusty wood heaters are
widely available and come in
a variety of styles: tradi-
tional Ben Franklins, or-
'nate box models, potbellied
'stoves or parlor types. Many
stoves do double duty as
cooking appliances, and
some have tempered glass
doors. so you can watch the
I flames. Others can be used
with the firebox doors open
for a fireplace effect. For
maximum heating value,
many manufacturers recom-
mend stoves that are air-,
tight, which means no leaks
or cracks around doors
What type and size fire-
place or stove should you
choose? That depends on
many factors: the size of the I
room you want to heat, the
location of the appliance,
your heating needs and how
you want the room to look.
Discuss all these points with
an experienced, reputable
dealer to make the best
choice. t
