Storm closes
(Continued from Page 1)
only vehicles moving were snowmobiles.
Schools were closed and even some business
places closed because of few customers and
the storm which made deliveries impossible.
Ironically enough, the 1975 snowstorm
happened on a Thursday and Friday as well.
As for this year's April snowstorm,
Graham Campbell, meterological technician
at the Sky Harbor Weather Station in
Goderich said that there had been a weather
advisory out Thursday night about a lot of
cold air coming in from the west. That cold
air hit a warm front which in Mr, Campbell's
words "made a beautiful storm."
"We were getting a lot of snow, but is was,
so dry and windy that none of it stayed in
this county," Mr. Campbell said.
The storm also caused hydro to go out'in
some areas including Ethel where power
went off some time Friday afternoon and was
restored on Saturday. A broken pin in the
system caused a loose wire to short circuit
another wire, thus cutting hydro service to
Ethel, according to Len Arnston, a line
foreman for Ontario. Hydro.
In Brussels only two. people, Vern Hooper
and Ross Patterson suffered the loss of
hydro for three or four hours on Friday when
a falling tree pulled the hydro wires down
according to Ken Graber, a village employee

United
Church
meeting
planned
The constitutionally re.
quired Annual meetings of
the London Conference of
The United Church will be
held in Sault Ste, Marie on
May 28 to May 31st, 1979.
Only twice in the 55 years
of United Church history has
the London Conference met
for its Annual meetings inthe
county of Algoma - the last
occasion was 16 years ago, in
1962.
Why Sault Ste. Marie?
The London Conference area
of jurisdiction, with its
90,000 members, embraces
the 8 Southwestern Ontario
Counties of Essex, Kent,
Lambton, Elgin, Middlesex,
Oxford, Huron and Perth.
Due to an historical and
sentimental oddity, it also
includes Algoma. Distances

just don't understand how we're so product-

"We don't pay farmers for doing nothing
in Canada. They must produce and they are
producing," he said.
Liberal candidate Graeme Craig told the
meeting that despite criticism of the
economy the fact was that Canadians still
had 37 per cent disposable income compared
with a 24 per cent disposable income in the
United States,
He described Canada as having one of the
most successful economies in the world and
said that the Liberal government had created
429,000 jobs in the last 12 months,
Surveys indicated that 86 per cent of the
people were now satisfied with their housing
and that that figure was only 60 per cent
when the present government was first
elected. The Liberal candidate emphasized
that 71 per cent of what the government
takes in is already committed to the
provinces and individuals for such
expenditures as pensions. The federal
government has only 29 per cent left with
which to carry on the business of Canada.
Crawford Douglas, M.P. for Grey-Bruce
told the meeting, "Never before have we
had an election as important as this one is to
you in Canada.

In other business a new 10 year lease was
granted to the Brussels Bowling Club. There
was some discussion and planning done for

Centre on Friday, July 13. The insurance
policy was reviewed and extra coverage was

Field crop entries are to be sent to a director

hoped there will be good weather and that
this year there will be another successful
