Bill or Dee
High vp at the carnival
BY DEBBIE RANNEY
The crowd watched, fascinated as Bill
Riddell a stilts skater did some fancy tricks
on his skates with the 18 inch high blades.
The crowd was at the Family Skating.
Carnival on Saturday night and Bill Riddell
obviously had their attention as faces
pressed up against the glass windows near
the seating area of the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre to watch him
skate under a rope, get himself up off the
ice with those high skates on and do many
other tricks besides.
When he was 10 years old, Bill saw a
stilts skater perform and that's when he
decided he'd like to do the same. His
parents bought him a small pair of stilts
skates, about six inches high. The 18 inch
high skates are the latest ones Bill uses.
Bill belonged to the St. Cathar ines
Figure Skating Club when he first becaiite

Curlers
wows crowds have
holiday interested in stilts skating and says at the
time he treated stilts skating, "just as if I
were figure skating."
"Since that time I haven't really paid
that much attention to regular skating," he
said.
Bill still lives in St. Cathar Ines but
Thorold is hishome club. Over the years he
has skated in places like Buffalo and
Montreal as well as at local clubs and
skating carnivals. And he's often booked
for every weekend from February to April.
He's been doing stilts skating for 39
years now and says, "It's mostly fun and
it's good for conditioning. It's a good
physical kind of activity," he says.
It's also,„sornething of an unusual activity
for someone who holds a position as the
education consultant for the central west
region of the Addiction Research Found-
ation.
