Two Wingham area men
have placed petitions in area
stores, factories and high
schools in an effort to keep
small community hospitals
open.
About two or three weeks
'ago, Brian Cronkwright and
Sam Cupskey of Wingham
started placing the petitions
in Wingham factories in the
high schools and in places
like Lucknovv, Clinton,
Goderich and all over Huron
County. The petitions are
also in Brussels stores.
Mr. Cronkwright said that
in one Luck now store, the
petition was filled front and
back. More petitions had to
be taken to a general store in
Belgrave. Mr. Cronkwright
said he had to repeat himself
in quite- a few places.
The men have collected
about 2500 names on their
petitions so far.
Already 14 beds are ex-
pected to be closed in the
Wingham hospital around
the first of April with 17 more
closings expected later. It's
those 17 other beds that
concern Mr. Cronkwright
and Sam Cupskey now.
Norman Hayes, executive
director fro Wingham
hospital had been asked what
would happen if there were
more sick children than avail-
able beds after the 14 beds in
the pediatrics unit are re-
moved and he said the
children would have to be
sent to another hospital.
There are only supposed to
be six beds in the unit.
Responding to the point
about the children being sent
to other hospitals, Mr.
Cronkwright said, "Why
should that be when the
person lives right in the town
of Wingham. We're the ones
2;500 wa r
beds .kOpt

he said,
He then used the same
example only changing the
name replacing Wingham
with Brussels.
Once all the petitions are
collected duplicate copies are
to be made and sent to
Health Minister Dennis
Timbrell along with a letter.
These will go by registered
mail.
AT the meeting, the public
was told that if everybody
would send a registered
letter to the minister it would
help.
It was also suggested at
the meeting that if Mr.
Timbrell refused to come to
this area that a couple of
busloads would go down to
see him instead. One man at
the meeting even
volunteered to pay for the
cost of the bus trip f Mr.
Cronkwright said.
The petitions were also
taken to other counties in the
interest of saving all the
small community hospitals.
But the men who started
the petition are interested in
saving those 17 beds in
Wingham because they be-
lieve that, "Eventually
they're just going to close the
hospital."
Get a good thing going.
Yourself.

Now that highway signs
are in metres and kilometres,
construction uses metres and
millimetres, and fabrics are
sold by the metre, Sandy
McArthur, Chairman of
Metric Commission Canada,
suggests Kilometrage and
metrage may replace the
words like mileage, footage
and yardage.
The 49th Meeting of Met-
ric Commission Canada held i
recently in Ottawa, con--
sidered "metrage" to be a
suitable replacement for
footage and yardage and
perhaps even mileage in the
English language. The
equivalent of the French
word "millage" in the
French language is of course
"kilometrage".
Mileage -has become ob-
solete in Canada, since con-
version of road -signs
throughout the country over
a year ago. Signs in metres
and kilometres accentuate
the need for a new word to
express odometer readings
and distance or length. Kilo-
metrage and Metrage may
catc1, on in sectors such as
road and urban transport,
electric power, construction,
real estate, land. .surveying
and town planning, the car-
pet industry, forestry, the
film industry, consumer and
retail trades. Both "kilomet-
rage" and "metrakes" are
used in the French language
in most of these sectors..
Seventy percent of tile
letters received in response
to Metric Commission
Canada's suggestion were in
favour of the use of
"metrage". Some of the
reasons given were: it's easy
to pronounce and spell; it has
about the same general
meaning in both official
languages (distance or
lengths measured in metric
units); and is a convenient
replacement for obsolescent
words like footage and yard-
age, It is suggested that
readers of this announce-
ment try using kilometrage
and metrage in house or-
gans, bulletins, magazines,
newspaper and audio visual
presentations, and evaluate
the possibility Of acceptance
of one or both new Words,
