You know what they say
"You know what they
say." How often has that
familiar saying sounded in
your ears? It is usually
followed by some cliche
which is "supposed" to have
a momentous moral lesson
within.
Many of these cliches,
however, contradict them-
selves, so being a constant
"quoter" could be hazardous
For instance, could you be make, is not that people
quoted as saying "do unto should never use cliches. I
others as you would have personally feel that they can
done unto yourself," with exemplify a point, in a very
high hopes of better behavior interesting way. I do not,
but also have said "if you however, think that they
want something done well, should be dotted throughout
you may as well do it our spoken language like
yourself", indicating that punctuation, which some
"others couldn't meet your people (the minority I admit)
standards anyway? tend to do.
The point I am trying to I would far prefer to hear
what you as an individual
have to say, rather than
something which I have
heard so many times, I have
it memorized. If you are a
cliche dropper please think
about this: "Make every-
thing you have to say worth
remembering without having
to remember everything you
say."

1979 is International Year of the Child
Here's what Ontario is doing
and what you' can do to improve the well-being
of our children.
, On January 18, the Senior
Mustangs travelled to Sea-
forth for their first road game
of the season, Against the
much-improved Seaforth
team, the Madill representa-
tives went &mu to defeat, 71
-54.
Girls in volleyball
tournament
On Saturday January 13th,
F. E. Madill held their first
invitational girls volleyball
tournament.
The junior team made
some vast improvements re-
sulting in a good day with
many excellent plays, Along
with these excellent plays
came wins over Goderich ,
Strathroy and South Huron
(Exeter). They were defeated
however, by Stratford Cen-
tral, Stratford Northwestern
and Sir Adam Beck (London).
At the end of their six
games, the juniors had made
their way to the semi-finals.
In the first game' of the
semi-finals, Madill lost 2
games to Stratford Central,
which ended their day at the
tournament.
The Madill Seniors took
part in the tournament on
Saturday also and proved to
have had a very successful
day.
The Madill Seniors quali-
fied for the semi-finals but
were defeated and put out by
Goderich in the best 2 out of
3 games.
All the Madill girls played
well and gained more game
exnerience.
The game started well as
Madill was awarded 11 free
throws because of Seaforth's
technical fouls (due to a
mix-up in uniform numbers)
Kevin Carter hit on 9 of those
11 "freebies", giving the
Mustangs a 9 - point advan-
tage. Unfortunately, after
that things seemed to go
downhill, Hassled by a
strong zone press,
had trouble bringing the,ball
out of their backcourt. Num-
erous turnovers caused by
the press, and a '1,11 of and
cold" defence that resulted
in many Seaforth baskets,
and early foul trouble, found
the Mustangs barely main-
taining a tied-score at the
quarter.
The Mustangs came, out of
the break strongly and for
awhile, it looked as if they
had regained their form, but
a barrage of poor shots again
put them behind. At the half,
they still held a slim 3-point
lead.
In the second half, Madill
never really seemed to find
their shooting range and
Seaforth overpowered them
both on the boards and in
shooting percentages.
Regardless of their record
this season, the Mustangs
are not down and out of it
yet. For instance, foul shoot-
ing has improved from the
20% of previous games to
70%. The team is looking
forward to their next season
game and the chance to
redeem lost pride. Let's give
them our support.K.U.

STUDENT INTERVIEWS
QUESTION: What do you
think about the latest revi-
sions of Secondary School
English Requirements?
Cathy Sholdice 10H - Pd just
as soon they didn't.
Syliva Beard 11A-1 think
it's a good idea so there
wouldn't be so many illiter-
ate people in Ontario!
Bruce Campbell 12A - We
should be taking more of the
basic skills in English. With-
out the ability to read and
write you can't do much.
Brenda Christe 10B - I think
the changes are good, A
better idea would be to take a
trip and see a production of a
play or film studied in
Literature--so that we can
compare our visualization
with a professional's.
Pauline McLellan WE - I
don't like English that much.
It's the kind of thing you
need to be made to do.
Dave Burns 10A - I think
it's good because a lot of
students enter University
and they're illiterate.
Nancy Schiestel 12H - I
Would like to take English,
the end of Grade 12 because
there's a lot of Grammar that
we stilt don't know. Also
spelling still should be tested
in high school.
Mark Gunter 10C - It's a
rip-off if you don't want to
take it you shouldn't have to.
Like you might only need one
credit to get out and you
might be able to get one
easier.
Anonymous it's more
boring. 'because there's so
Much more detail and that.
Like in creative Writing yoti
earl put down what you want
and that in your own words.
The Grammar part is the
designing of the sentence.
It's more repetition and you
should go over it all the tirtie.
The United Nations
has proclaimed 1979
L, as International Year
of the Child in order
to focus attention on
Year Of the Child children everywhere.
In Ontario, the Government has
always looked at children as our
most precious resource and has
worked to provide them with the
best possible health, education and
social programs.
In 1979, we intend to strengthen
these services and programs in the
belief that the peace and prosperity'
of the future depends on the
well-being of our children today
However, the Year of the Child to
be truly successful in Ontario, must
have everyone's support ...
your support.
Only you, as a parent or friend„
can provide the love and concern
that is so essential to the healthy
development of a child.
