Times-Advocate, 1978-11-30, Page 10After a slow start the Exeter Hawks are stretching their wings in recent weeks and flying near the top of the standings in the OHA western junior “D” league. The Hawks won two more games this week to run their current winning streak to seven and are only two points back of the league leading Mitchell Hawks. Coach Ron Bogart has his charges moving in high gear despite a couple of injuries. Goalie Steve Beer was lost for the season when he broke a leg in a football game a few weeks ago and Friday night, the team's leading scorer Fred Mommersteeg Jr. suffered a broken collarbone early in the contest against Seaforth. While seeing only a little action in the Friday game, Mommersteeg leads the Hawks with 23 points. Next with 20 points each are Ken Pinder and Jamie Caldwell at 20 points a piece. The next chance for local fans to see the Hawks in action will be Friday night when the Lucan Irish will visit the South Huron Rec Centre. The last time these two arch rivals met, the emphasis was on the offensive with the Hawks pulling out a 9-8 victory. To date the Irish have three victories and the same number of ties in 11 starts. A special show Three members of the Exeter figure skating club will be appearing in a special television show next Thursday. December?. Brenda Pincombe, Laurie Prout and Audrey Adkins will be seen on Stars on Ice as part of the Ilder- ton winter club precision skating team. The show will be seen on CKCO Kitchener, Channel 13 at 7 p.m., next Thursday night. Don’t miss it. While talking about figure skaters, a large number of the local club members were successful in the first test days of the year held last week. Three members went a little further a field Sun day and participated in tests at the Stratford club. Successfully passing their tests were Karen Hart, Debbie Josephson and Eleanor Salmon. Plan dinner One of the sporting highlights in the area will soon be rolling around again. We are talking of the sixth an nual Exeter Sportsmen’s Dinner. Sponsored by the Exeter Lions it will be held Tuesday, February 6 at the South Huron Rec Centre. Dinner chairman Peter Raymond and his hard working committee have already lined up a good nucleus of speakers and celebrities and this will be added to as the dinner comes closer. The headline speaker is former Pittsburgh Pirate manager Bobby Bragan, who did some of his major league catching with the old Brooklyn Dodgers. Probably one of the colorful and definitely the oldest and most experienced of the celebrities will be Frank Selke Sr. who needs no introduction to hockey fans of all ages. The Lions continue to come up each year with ex cellent masters of ceremonies and this year is no ex ception. At the head table to introduce the guests will be Tom McKee of CBC Sports. Negotiations are now going on for representatives from the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers and Toron to Argos. Another distinct possibility is Father Quinn of the famous Flying Fathers hockey team. Tickets for the dinner remain at $25 and are available from any member of theExeter Lions club. A portion of this amount can be used for tax deduc tions. 1979 baseball 1978 DODGE ASPEN Sta tion wagon, super 6, automatic, power steering, power brakes and radio. Low mileage, Licence MLE742.
