If you come to visit the Exeter United Church any morning from 9 to 11:30 you will hear the buzz of activity as the children enrolled in Sunshine Kids Nursery School go about their daily program. The Nursery is a parent co-operative type of school, where the parents organize and operate the group, and also assist in the morning programs. There is a three day and two day program each week, and a total of 36 children attend in all. The staff consists of Mrs. Phyllis Johnson, and Mrs. Ruth Mercer. The school is set up in ac tivity areas such as creative crafts, block area, climber for large muscle activity, housekeeping area complete with dress-up clothes, and small muscle and co ordination aid areas such as puzzles and small building toys. The children are en couraged to move freely through all areas, and so to establish their concepts of each piece of equipment. They also learn to relate to their peers, and to share, take turns, and work together as a group. Each morning a circle time is held, where the weather is discussed, songs, games, finger plays and discussions relating to the weekly themes are carried out. The school began the year with themes on family, homes and where we live. Discussed were safety - both fire and traffic. In conjunction with these themes the students enjoyed visits from the local firemen complete with the fire truck and from the Exeter police who gave each child a copy of his or her own finger prints to take home. Hoffman’s Ambulance also visited the school and after demonstrating the equipment gave the children a short ride in the am bulance. Hallowe’en was celebrated with a Hallowe’en Party complete with cartoons, songs, games, costumes, and a special snack prepared by the Mothers Party Com mittee. A great time was enjoyed by all. The month of November will see themes of colours, shapes, numbers in English and French, and a winter theme. This will lead direct ly into December and our Christmas month. In this type of Nursery School, parents and children share together, the child’s first formal type of educa tion, and this is an ex perience that both ap- some openings still predate for many years to available.
