T-A photo Host Tavistock, Friday Hawks in battle for basement The Exeter Hawks will find themselves in an unusual position when they skate onto the ice at the South Huron rec centre, Friday, They’ll be facing the Tavistock Braves in that encounter and the two teams will be battling to escape the cellar of the northern division of the Western Junior "D” league. For the past two years, the Hawks have been at the top end of that league, but now find themselves tied with Tavistock for last place behind Mitchell, Lucan and Seaforth, with identical records of two wins and four losses, not including Exeter’s game last night in Bothwell. The Hawks dropped their only two starts this week, losing 6-1 in Thamesford, Friday, and then coming home from Mitchell with a 5- * 3 deficit on Tuesday. However, even in defeat there was a glimmer of hope, as netminder Randy Lovie turned in an exceptional effort against Mitchell, to give indications he is returning to form after being out of the lineup with a knee injury for most of last season. Lovie has been forced into full-time service due to a broken leg suffered by the Hawks other netminder, Steve Beer. Exeter also kept the score close on their namesakes from Mitchell, who were rolling to their fifth straight win. Mitchell took an early lead in'the tilt on a power play, but . Fred Mommersteeg knotted the count near the end of the first period when he finished off a power play with Dave Bogart and Jamie Caldwell. Exeter took a 2-1 lead in the opening minutes of the second when Caldwell scored on a power play, with the assist going to Mom mersteeg and Don McKellar. Mitchell then took ad vantage of having two extra men to even the count at 6:01 and took a 3-2 lead when they scored 30 seconds later with one Exeter player still watching from the penalty box. Exeter evened the count shortly after the mid-way mark when Dave Atthill found the range on a play with Terry Caldwell, but Mitchell came back four minutes later to score the eventual winner with the teams playing even, They added the insurance marker in the final minutes of the third period when Brad Fisher scored unassisted on a short handed situation, one of several occasions this season when the Hawks have been scored on while enjoying 'a power play. Lovie handled 44 shots in the Exeter net as the hosts dominated play throughout each period. He had 17 shots in the final period and kept his team in contention with some stellar play. The teams were even in the penalty parade, each serving 10 minors. In Friday night’s contest in Thamesford, the Hawks were without the services of two regulars, and ran out of steam in the final stanza as the Trojans scored four times to post their decisive 6-1 margin. The Hawks out-played their hosts by a slim margin over the first two periods, but some stellar netminding by Andy Riley kept them off the sheet on several good attempts. They took a 1-0 lead late in the first period when Jamie Caldwell blinked the light on a play with Kerry Bedard and -Dave Bogart, but Thamesford took over the scoring from that point to hand the Hawks their third loss of the season. The Trojans knotted the count in the last minute of the first, scored the winner on a power play in the se cond and then rattled home their other four in the third, one of those also coming on a power play and another while the Hawks enjoyed the man advantage. Exeter won the penalty parade, picking up 15, in cluding a 10 minute miscon duct to Don McKellar in the final minutes of the third. This victory was welcomed as it gave the team a needed boost for their final game against the fancied Medway High School, where hockey has been played for ten years, with considerable success at provincial level. Both teams played fast attractive hockey with the play moving from end to end. The local girls pressured and frustrated the opposition and had many good scoring chances, but the ball refused to enter the net. Two minutes from the end Medway broke away and scored a fine goal. South Huron continued their pressure, but to no ayaiL This was quite a day for goaltender Carol DeJonge, who recorded four shut outs,-* The girls enderf the season with no silverware, but they should be congratulated on playing their best ever season of hockey. Mayor Bruce Shaw an nounced that three of the four local members of the rec centre board would be retiring, including himself, George Godbolt and Kim McLean. In a letter to council this week, the rec centre board advised that the ap pointments should be made later this year so the new members can assume office at the first January meeting. The only local represen tative planning to stay on for another term is Jerry MacLean. Former mayor, Jack Delbridge, has also tendered his resignation as a member of the committee of adjust ment. Derry Boyle, who will take over the mayor’s chair, said he already had two men who indicated they would fill vacancies on the rec centre board. c Old checker players never die. They just move away.
