The grouse exploded only
five feet away from my
hunting partner and headed
directly over my head. We
knew the bird was there but
still he escaped unscratched.
This scene repeats itself
thousands of times every fall
as Ontario’s hunters take to
the bush in search of the
ruffed grouse.
A very tasty bird which is
found throughout the province
can withstand almost any
amount of hunting pressure.
If hunted hard they become
so wary that they are rarely
seen,
This allows a long season
which is open until January
15 and a five bird per clay
bag limit.
Most woodlots near water
will harbor this grouse. This
is especially true if they
contain hawthorns, apples or
grapes for food and a few
cedar or spruce for roosting.
The ruffed grouse often
called partridge is a
beautifully camouflaged
bird which varies from
reddish to grayish brown.
Although several may be
found per acre they are
usually loners and once
flushed rarely fly more than
on hundred yards. This often
allows a hunter more than
one shot at a bird.
Being very fast flyers and
because they frequent heavy
cover a short barreled open
choke gun is best. Any gauge
will do as the birds are not
hard to kill (if you can hit

them), 12 and 20’s are most
popular with 7^ shot.
The best time to hunt
grouse is after the leaves
fall. At this time you can see
the ones which flush farther
out and they can be seen for
a longer period of time. Both
of these will allow better
shots and often more
shooting.
Our area has had good
populations of grouse the last
two years and this year looks
just as good.
A bonus to the grouse
hunter is the woodcock
which is often found in the
same area. These little
brown birds are about the
size of a robin and have long
beaks, big eyes and a big
head.
They feed on worms which

Principal J.L. Wooden

enrolment in the classes was
about the same as usual with
400 area residents attending.
The most popular classes
are quilting and powder puff

been so popular that it has

grouse which stay with us all

When the northern birds

very tight and like grouse

The Maitland River has
been attracting many
anglers last week as the fall

Several local fishermen

Hopefully we will see them
