Schlegel By JOY SCHEIFELE Repeatedly throughout the memorial service in celebration of his life, the late Wilfred Schlegel of Ailsa Craig was referred to as one who had lived life for the glory of God and whose fruits of his labours will long continue to be a living memorial. After suffering a heart attack a few weeks earlier, he died on August 7 in St. Joseph’s Hospital, London. A native of the Tavistock area, he moved to Middlesex County in 1948 with hjs wife Emma, and their young family. He was the founding pastor of the Nairn Men­ nonite Church and remained its pastor for the next 25 years. Here his vision and leadership brought several enterprises into being in­ cluding London Rescue Mission (now Mission Ser­ vices of London), Craigwood a treatment centre for emotionally disturbed boys, Parkhill Girls Home, a similar centre, Craigholme Nursing Home with Craigweil Gardens Senior Masons al at resort cottage By MRS. E. SUMMERS GRANTON Officers of the Granton Masonic lodge attended a cookout at Mr, & Mrs. Carl Mills cottage at Stokes Bay over the week end. Couples attending from the area were Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred Riddell, Mr. & Mrs. James Hodgins, Mr. & Mrs. Percy Hodgins, and Mr. & Mrs. John Harlton. Mr. & Mrs. Oliver Peters of Merlin were dinner guests with Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Harlton, Saturday: Mr. & Mrs. Austin Hobbs of the village visited with Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Wilson of London and new daughter Rebecca Jean. It is good to hear Mrs. Austin Hobbs is improving in health and gaining weight after her hospital stay. Mr. & Mrs. Harold Jones and family enjoyed 10 days in the Parrie Sound area camping. They stopped off at Barrie and enjoyed a day at a 25 acre zoo. In addition he was heavily associated with Meadowcrest Residences Inc. which provides homes for retarded adults and chronic psychiatric patients .referred by London Psychiatric Hospital, the Christianview Bible College in Ailsa Craig and influenced many other community projects reaching out to help others. He also owned the Shady Pines KOA Camp, a family trailer camp at Nairn. Over 200 relatives, close friends and Christian brothers filled the Parkhill Community Centre for a memorial service Sunday August 13 to give thanks for his life. A dozen persons representing the varied aspects of his involvements paid tribute to his out­ standing leadership. The Rev. Mrs. Shirley Bannerman, Willa Harding, Mary McRobert, Audrey Watt and children visited on Friday with Mrs. Irene (Smith) Osborne, Strathroy and her sister Mrs. Margaret Jameson of New Liskeard. Miss Ann-Marie Beaucage has returned home from a month’s vacation from New Brunswick where she was visiting with her brother and family. Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Lewis holidayed last week in the Sault St. Marie and Tobermory region. They also visited the Agawa Canyon one day which is a 115 mile trip by train from Sault St. Marie. Church News Rev. Mary Mills conducted the service of morning prayer at SL Thomas Anglican Church. Her message was taken from Paul’s 2nd letter to the people at Corinth regarding Christian morals. Moderator of the Western Ontario Mennonite Con­ ference, Steve Gerber mentioned his deep spiritual roots and described him as a completely genuine Christian. A letter addressed to Mrs. Schlegel and family from Bill Stewart, former M.P.P. who was not able to be present was read by William Frank, a community friend and former member of parliament in which Mr. Stewart also spoke warmly of Mr. Schlegel’s faithful witness and unswerving service to those less for­ tunate. Mr. Frank himself commented on Wilfred’s philosphy which was to believe a person honest until proven otherwise which has greatly affected his own outlook on life. Closely associated with him for over 20 years through the in­ terdenomination vacation Bible School held annually for community children, Mrs. Lois Watson recalled how he always insisted love be uppermost in every teacher-pupil relationship. His willingness to be of service not only at home but abroad was testified to by Jack Wall of Ausable Springs Ranch as he spoke of the Schlegel’s recent in­ volvement with the poor in Haiti. They spent much of last winter personally ser­ ving among the Haitians Others who paid tribute included the Rev. Henry Yantzi, boyhood friend and colleague, Lome Smith, President of Ailsa Craig & District Sr. Citizens, Rev.. Arthur Gingerich of Meadowcrest Inc., Abe Dick, Chairman of Parkhill Girls Home, Aubrey McCallum, Reeve of East Williams Twp. and Nelson Scheifele, Administrator of Craigholme. The Rev. D.B. Graham, Chairman of the Board of Governors of Christianview Bible College spoke “In Praise of God.” The Rev. David Brunner led the service in prayer and., scripture reading. Special music was provided by the Alf Ropp family. Wilfred Schlegel is sur­ vived by his wife, Emma, and their five children, Wayne, Marilyn, Ronald, Janet and Ernest and 13 grandchildren. Michael Scott went on a 4- H bus trip Thursday. They visited the Shur gain farm at Maple, Ontario Science Centre and the Blue Jays Baseball game. Billy Foster, Stratford is holidaying with his grand­ mother Margery Morley. Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Ferguson visited Thursday with Mrs. Grace Zavitz, Thedford. Essery and Ruth Ann attended the Friday evening wedding of their cousin in Fenton, Michigan and were guests for the week end with Miss Arlene Newcombe, Drayton Plains, Michigan. Ruth Anne remained with her aunt for some holidays. Kimberley Harrison has returned to her home in Lucan following a two week’s vacation with her grandmother, Mrs. Minnie Harrison. Other visitors at the home of Mrs. Harrison were her niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cramer and Judy of Windsor on Sunday; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pearce and family of London were Monday visitors. Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Molnar, Jim and Nancy, Agincourt were visitors during the past week with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Molnar.
