Times-Advocate, 1978-06-15, Page 11Tigers win one tourney tilt The Dashwood Tigers won one of three games played in a weekend invitational baseball tournament in Tills onburg. Their only victory came in exciting fashion by a 1-Q score over Thorold with the only run of the game coming in the final inning. They started the tour nament by losing 7-1 to Leaside. After the win over Thorold, the Tigers were defeated 11-8 by Cambridge and were eliminated. The Dashwood club swings back into Huron-Perth action this week with three games on the schedule. Friday night they will be on their home field to take on Thorndale at 8 p.m. Sunday they travel to Lambeth to meet Byron in a 2 p.m. contest and Monday night they will meet the Thorndale juniors in Thorndale. The only run in the opening 7-1 loss to Leaside came in the fourth inning. With two out Rob Dickey walked. He moved to third on a double from the bat of Jim Dietrich and scored on Noel Skinner’s single. The only other Tiger hits in the seven inning contest were a single delivered by John Hayter and Barry Baynham’s double. Southpaw Jim Guenther went the pitching distance for the Tigers. He was touched for seven runs and 10 hits. Jim Pfaff and Jim Guenther combined to get the 1-0 victory over Thorold. Pfaff went the first five innings giving up only four hits and holding the op position scoreless. Guenther allowed only one base runner and that was on an error in three innings of relief work. He picked up the victory. The only run came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Noel Skinner notched the sixth Dashwood hit, a single. He was then forced at second on Perry Stover’s grounder. Stover crossed the plate as the Thorold second baseman booted Barry Baynham’s grounder. The other Dashwood hits were singles contributed by Barry Baynham, Bob Hoffman, Jim Dietrich, Noel Skinner and playing manager Glenn Thurman. The Tigers were able to move ahead of Cambridge by a score of 8-6 after four innings of play in their final contest but they were unable to hold on in the late innings. Jim Pfaff, Jim Guenther and Perry Stover shared pitching duties for the Dash wood club. Singles by Bob Hoffman and John Hayter provided the power for the first two Dashwood scores in the first inning. In the Tiger second, Bob Hoffman opened with a single and rode home on John Hayter’s home run BEST AT EPS — Winners in six divisions were named in Thursday's track and field meet at Ex eter Public School.
