GRANTON
The April Granton UCW
general meeting was held in
the United Church Tuesday
evening with Mrs. Fred Cook
presiding and opening the
meeting with a poem.
Following the business
session, Mrs. Leroy Bryan
reported the ighlights of the
UCW Middlesex
Presbyterial meeting held at
First St. Andrew’s Church in
London. The delegate to
Alma College leadership
school in August will be Mrs.
Roy Penman, and Granton
UCW will be represented at
Westminster Weekend by
Mrs. Leroy Bryan.
Members were reminded
of the UCW Rally at
Brown’s United Church
April 26 beginning with a
dessert tea at 6:30 p.m. The
theme will be “Getting
Together”. Members are
urged to attend this rally and
support Mrs. Leroy Bfryan
who as Regional First-vice
president will be in the chair.
Granton will be responsible
for the music.
Guest speakers were Mrs.
Marie Gingrich and Mrs,
Betty Kirby, two
housemothers from the
Meadow Crest home* for
retarded Adults. Mrs. Kirby
is also the craft instructor
for the Crest homes in the
area.
These ladies gave a very
informative account of their
work with the Crest
program, a pilot project in
Canada started in Ailsa
Craig. Meadow Crest is a
home where 12 adults live as
a family with houseparents,
and if they are capable share
in the work of home.
The women bake and do
household chores and assist
the housemother and the
men work outside on the
grounds, etc. They receive
understanding and care
from the houseparents, and
are taken on holidays and
pleasure trips, also taught
different crafts. The public is
invited to a Crest carnival
Saturday May 18 at Ailsa
Craig.
An inspirational skit
titled “Reflections in
tront of a mirror, and the
guests arrived they naturally
went to the mirror to
straighten their hair, and
noticing the open Bible, it
became the topic of their
conversation.
Members taking part were
Mrs. Glen Jameson hostess,
Mrs. C. B. Westman, Mrs.
Gordon McRobert and Mrs.
Wm Goos guests. The
meeting closed with prayer
and the Benediction followed
by lunch.
4-H news
For the seventh meeting of
the Granton 4-H Club “Focus
on Living” the Leisure
Lassies met at the home of
Susanne Giesen Wednesday
evening. The meeting
opened with the 4-H Pledge,
and the roll call was an
swered by naming “An
Important rule for
babysitting”.
Plans were finalized for
the field trip to Jack Miner’s
Saturday. The book-covers
were discussed and it was
decided that the committee
Mrs. Robt Garrett Monday
evening.
It was decided to name the
skit on safety for
Achievement Day “Safety
depends on you”, Brenda
Tomlin and Anne Garrett are
to come up with an idea for
the skit.
Former leader Mrs ,
Michael O’Shea attended the
meeting and brought her
baby son Jamie. Mrs. O’Shea
talked to the girls on how to
care for a baby. Miss Brenda
Cook was also a guest, and
talked to the members about
first aid, demonstrating two
forms of mouth to mouth
resuscitation, these were the
Nelson and Sylvester types.
Brenda also passed out
booklets on how to deal with
poisonings and burns.
Leader Mrs, Jack Noon gave
the members their home
assignment and the meeting
closed with the 4-H motto.
Holy Communion was
celebrated on Sunday
morning with Rev. Mary
Mills as the celebrant
assisted by Miss Marion
Herbert who read the Epistle
of the Day. Rev, Mills ser
mon was a continuation on
the 21st chapter of the Gospel
of St. John.
At the United Church Rev.
Elwood Morden was in
charge of the morning
worship and took the theme
for his sermon from Luke
and entitled it ‘A tree to
climb’. A child needs a tree
to climb so that he may grow
in health and strength.
Adults need a tree to climb
too, such as the tree of
prayer with its branches of
spoken and silent prayer,
then there is the tree of
Science with its branches
new experiences of the study
of history, Scripture, man
and nature.
Then there are others
which challenge us, such as
the trees of Worship, Ser
vice, and the highest of all
Dedication, with its bran
ches intertwining all the
others, said Rev. Morden.
