BEST IN LEAGUE —- Several awards were presented at the annual South Huron hockey league banquet at the rec centre, Fri­ day. T-A photo A large number of trophies were presented Friday night at the annual banquet of the South Huron intermediate hockey league held at the South Huron Rec. Centre in Exeter. The North Middlesex Merchants of Parkhill took home the top team awards. Coached by Leroy Walker, the Merchants won the regular schedule cham­ pionship and prevailed as the best in the playoffs by defeating the Grand Bend Colonials in the final round. The Merchants received the Derry Boyle trophy for their regular season efforts and the Galloway Dairy Farm award for their playoff win. The most valuable player trophy provided by the Crediton hockey club was won by Grand Bend Colonial netminder John Hayter, Other nominees for the most valuable player were Jim McGee, Centralia College, Paul Corriveau, Goderich-Clinton; Brian Campbell, Hensall; Randy Funston, Huron Park; Ernie Schlegel, Parkhill; Larry Willert, Thedford and Pat .Bedard, Zurich.’ Brian Campbell of the Hensall Combines won the John Galloway trophy as the league’s leading scorer. Runnersup in the scoring parade were Paul Corriveau of the Goderich-Clinton Combines; Rick Ingram, Hensall Combines; Roy Walker, Centralia College and Ernie Schlegel, North Middlesex Merchants. Grant Campbell of the Thedford Browns was named the most improved player in the league and won the Royal Bank of Canada trophy. Also nominated were Roy Walker, Centralia; John Hoy, Goderich-Clinton; Pete Gil, Grand Bend; Dwight Consitt, Hensall; Ray Snell, Huron Park; Rick Heaman, Parkhill and Peter Postill, Zurich. The Exeter District Co- Operative trophy for the best defenceman went to Ron Corriveau of the Goderich- Clinton Combines. Other nominees were Randy Jacobi, Centralia; Bob Lovie, Grand Bend; Wayne Corbett, Hensall; Bob Snell, Huron Park; Ken Fraser, Parkhill; Dwayne Molloy, Thedford and Mike Clarke, Zurich, The Dashwood Industries trophy naming the best goal tender was shared by Tom Steeper and Murray Jamison of the cham­ pionship Parkhill club. Taking the most three star awards during the year were Randy Funston, Huron Park; Rick Ingram, Hensall and John Hayter, Grand Bend. They won the Pat O’Brien, Parkhill United Co- Operatives and the Tuckey Beverage trophies. The rookie of the year and winner of the Leroy Walker trophy was Terry Caldwell of the Hensall Combines. The rookie runnersup were John Corman, Centralia, Dave Graf, Goderich- Clinton; Joe Falsetti, Grand1 Bend; Dave Smith, Huron Park; Dan Lagerwerf, Parkhill; Kevin Elliott, Thedford and Marty Becker, Zurich.
