WILLIAM ROHDE Hosting the Huron South District Annual of the Women’s Institute was Hurondale Women’s Institute at Thames Road United Church on May 17, 1979. Mrs. Glen Stewart welcomed all the nine branches and Kippen East replied and invited all to the Kippen branch for the 1980 District Annual. Mrs. James Drummond, president of the Huron South District, chose the theme “Growing to Help Others Grow”. Mrs. Keith Hiepleh president of the London area brought greetings and said the area convention will be in the St. Marys arena November 1 and 2. Mrs. Wm Porter, provincial board director reported and conducted our election of officers. Miss Grace Bird, Home Economist from Huron County, spoke on the busy year’s activities. The Thames Road United Church Women set up a delicious pot-luck smorgasbord table of food at noon. The afternoon speaker was Rev. Ray Edwards of Woodstock. His moving speech was on child beating, as he was one of those children in his early years. Rev. Edwards asked that the Women’s Institute take a firm stand on this issue and' be prepared to speak out. The student at Centralia College of Agricultural Technology who received the Huron South District Women’s Institute Award for highest standing in .Com­ munity Home Economics was Elaine Ruth Huras, Stratford. Mrs. Barry Miller and infant daughter Rebecca Jean returned home from South Huron Hospital, Exeter, Monday. Mr. & Mrs. Glenn Jeffery were Sunday guests with Mr. & Mrs. Carl Willert, Zurich. Mrs. E. Mellenger, British Columbia visited recently with Mr. & Mrs. Alvin Passmore also with her son and daughter-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Rick Mellenger of Hensali. Miss Sandra de mooy, London spent the holiday weekend with her grand­ parents Mr. & Mrs. Alvin Passmore, , Mr. & Mrs. Robert Bremner of Brantford and Mr. & Mrs. Jack Duncan attended the Navy reunion at Peterborough on Saturday and returned home Sunday. Mr. & Mrs. Lorne Han­ sford and family, London visited with Mr. & Mrs. Ross Hargreaves. Mission and Service Sunday will be a joint service with Elimville at Thames Road Sunday May 27 at 11 a.m. Miss Joan Allen will be the guest speaker. Members of midweek group are to'sit with their group leaders. United Church Women The May meeting of the United Church Women was held recently with Mrs. Jack Stewart as hostess. Mrs. David Passmore welcomed everyone and gave a reading “Only One Mother”. Mrs. David Passmore read different scripture readings regarding family life. The offering was received by Mrs. Jean Allen and Mrs. Alvin Passmore and the Offertory prayer was given by Mrs. Myrtle Metters. Mrs. Archie Etherington read “Mothers Day Around the World.” The ladies sang Will your anchor hold. Mrs. David Passmore introduced Miss Joan Allen who recently returned home from India. Joan showed pictures and gave a wonderful com­ mentary of her pictures and work, Mrs. Etherington thanked Joan and presented her with a gift. »Mrs. Rohde opened the business part of the meeting with a poem For all won­ derful Mothers. The usual business was dealt with. An invitation to Elimville was received for the 23rd of May for a blossbm tea with Mrs. Gwen as guest speaker. It was decided to cater to the Fire Insurance banquet in October at Kirkton- Woodham Community Centre. The prices for the strawberry supper June 18 were settled. A committee of Mrs. Murray Dawson, Mrs. David Passmore and Mrs. Lorne Ballantyne were named to look after the articles for Exeter Fair. Housecleaning of the church was discussed. It was also decided to save Canada Packers labels etc. We sang Faith of Our Mothers. The meeting was closed with prayer. A display of needlepoint was shown of those who took the course in early spring. A skit was presented by the leaders of the different committees and was prepared by Mrs. Edison McLean and Mrs. J. Anderson. Mrs. H. Bin- nendyke gave courtesy remarks and Mrs. Keith Lovell and Mrs. Ray Consitt served tea and “goodies”. The ladies of St. Andrews Church Kippen honoured Chris McGregor with a miscellaneous shower in the Church on May 16. E. “Ten “Quilts”. Mrs. Whitehouse gave Commandments of how to get along with people.” Mrs. Vern Alderdice gave current events and courtesy remarks. Delegates to the District Annual to be held May 17 will be Mi’s, Robert Kinsman Mrs. Dave Triebner and Mrs. Alex McGregor. A thank you was read from Isabelle Savage of Huron- view who is the Sunshine Sister of Kippen East. Cake and ice cream was served by the committee in charge and the hostess Mrs. James Chalmers and Mrs. E. Whitehouse. At roll call each member presented a beautiful quilt block out of which Mrs. A. Wilson and Mrs. Gibson when they met in the Legion Hall, Hensail, May 15. Estelle Wilson introduced Mary Gibson and Kathy Mustard who presented the demonstration “Face Framers”. Heather Moffatt, Jean Allan, Julie Townsend, Brenda Broadfoot, Estelle Wilson, Mary Gibson, Janet Kerr, Lisa Johns, Melissa Moffatt, Kathy Mustard took part. Jean Allan was presented with a gift in honour of her achievement of Provincial Honours. Mrs. E. Whitehouse thanked the leaders to which Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Gibson responded. Heather Moffatt thanked the Institute for their interest in 4-H work. Mrs. Alex McGregor chaired this part of the program.
