Times-Advocate, 1979-05-24, Page 8Page 8 Times-Advocate, May 24, 1979 Crediton Wl marks 60 years, review highlights of that history By MISS ELLA MORLOCK The Crediton Womens Institute held their 60th anniversary in the Crediton Community Hall, Wed­ nesday. All former members were invited to attend this special meeting. President Mrs. Gerald Dearing welcomed about 50 past and present members. The roll call was answered by each in turn telling when andwhy I joined the institute. Some of the older members related some very humourous incidents on becoming institute members and a few ladies brought mementoes they had from their first courses. The minutes were and approved. Lois Hodgins then read the correspon­ dence, Mrs. Don Davey gave the treasurer’s report and business was discussed. The meeting was then turned over to Mrs. Glen Hodgins who read the motto “Institute”. Angela Fleming played several accordion selections. Mrs. Peter Martin sang “In the Gar­ den”. Angela again favoured with more accordion pieces. Dave McClure showed slides of different rural scenes from Huron County from Lake Huron to Exeter and gave an interesting and informative talk along with the slides. Included in Mr. McClure’s presentation were several slides of the old Kerr brick yards and several prominent Exeter homes built from bricks from the Crediton brick yards. Mrs. Earl Neil then chaired the program on behalf of the Tweedsmuir history group. Mrs. Wilfred Mack, London, read the minutes of the t very first Crediton Womens Institute meeting. She was an original member enrolled by her mother. Some of the highlights were April 4, 1919, several ladies met in the Forester Rooms. Mrs. Haistings the district president of W.I. addressed the ladies. Election of officers followed: President, Mrs. Charles Zwicker; vice-president, Mrs. Christian Haist; recording secretary, Mrs. Herbert Eilber. Mrs. Mack was thanked and presented with a lovely blue and gold floral arrangement by Mrs. Cliff Kenney. Mrs. Earl Haist gave an account of the highlights of the past 60 years. Many worthwhile projects were started by the organizers, an ambitious group of 49 women in the first years and were continued many years after. They encouraged children to plant gardens, resulting in the first school fair, a travelling library was saved short read BE A BLOOD DONOR established. A piano was purchased. They raised the money by holding oyster suppers, box socials, booths at public functions and grants from the village of $20 and a government grant of $3. The money they earned from some of their projects went to the Crediton Athletic Association in 1921 to finance a very important project; the buying of the Community field. The cost was $850, $650 of it paid by the W.I. They also financed digging a well and providing a skating rink. In 1924 a fine entrance to the field was erected, pillars, ornamental gate and plaque. They also bought a half share in an open air Victor motion picture. Total cost of gates and motion picture was $1,155. In December, 1923 they held their annual oyster supper and bazaar and celebrated the coming of hydro power in Crediton. In 1933 Welcome to Crediton signs were erected at the East and West approaches of Crediton One of the ladies'earnest desires was realized in 1952 when the old town hall was remodelled. They finally had a kitchen. They were happy that there was a room for a library. The first card parties were held in 1948, a forerunner of our Winter euchres. From 1949 to 1953 Girl Guides were sponsored. In 1956- the first 4-H homemaking Club was formed with 16 girls. This year there was five clubs. In 1977 new gates were erected at the Community Park. Replacing the old ones which were destroyed by vandals. The blue prints being drawn by Sandra Shapton. This year has been a good one with excellent meetings. We have 39 members and 12 life members on the role. Throughout the years there have been speakers from practically every profession and interesting exchange visits with sister Institutes. The WI have given freely of their time energy and talent to help in any need in the community. They have given much and have gained much themselves. Mrs. Emmery Fahrner was honoured for her 80th birthday, Thursday. The former member coming the longest distance was Donna Bushfield of Woodstock. She was presented with an Institute plate. Mrs. Earl Neil read a poem written in 1919 by Mrs. Todd of Orillia. She was a president at that time, “What Institute means to me.” Mrs. Mack reminisced and showed some of her treasured mementoes from Institute. Mrs. Bruce Shapton presented Mrs. Gerald Dearing with a scroll of the first meeting to be hung in a place of prominence in the Institute room. Selling Price 60th anniversary cake. A silent auction was held and a lovely lunch was served by Mrs. Don Finkbeiner, Mrs. Cora Wein, Mrs. Bernice Cooper, Mrs. Russell King, Mrs. Lome Hodge. Personals Miss Lesley Adams was a weekend visitor with Mr. & Mrs. Peter Martin, Ruth Anne and Lisa. A gala* fireworks display was enjoyed by several hundred people at the Community Park Monday evening. The fireworks was sponsored by the Crediton Firemens Association. Many thanks to all the firemen who freely gave of their time to the betterment of the community spirit. We should all support them faithfully in any way we can. Sunday May 27 will be anniversary Sunday at Zion United Church. Rev. M. E. Reuber Stratford will be the piest speaker. Special music is planned. An evening service at 7:30 will also be held. Mrs. William Parsons, nee Almeeda Finkbeiner was interred in Crediton Cemetery, Tuesday, Some of the residents of Crediton have been observed taking advantage of the roller skating rink at the park.
