Crediton Wl marks 60 years,
review highlights of that history
By MISS ELLA MORLOCK
The Crediton Womens
Institute held their 60th
anniversary in the Crediton
Community Hall, Wed
nesday. All former members
were invited to attend this
special meeting.
President Mrs. Gerald
Dearing welcomed about 50
past and present members.
The roll call was answered
by each in turn telling when
andwhy I joined the institute.
Some of the older members
related some very
humourous incidents on
becoming institute members
and a few ladies brought
mementoes they had
from their first
courses.
The minutes were
and approved. Lois Hodgins
then read the correspon
dence, Mrs. Don Davey gave
the treasurer’s report and
business was discussed.
The meeting was then
turned over to Mrs. Glen
Hodgins who read the motto
“Institute”. Angela Fleming
played several accordion
selections. Mrs. Peter
Martin sang “In the Gar
den”. Angela again favoured
with more accordion pieces.
Dave McClure showed
slides of different rural
scenes from Huron County
from Lake Huron to Exeter
and gave an interesting and
informative talk along with
the slides.
Included in Mr. McClure’s
presentation were several
slides of the old Kerr brick
yards and several prominent
Exeter homes built from
bricks from the Crediton
brick yards.
Mrs. Earl Neil then
chaired the program on
behalf of the Tweedsmuir
history group. Mrs. Wilfred
Mack, London, read the
minutes of the t very first
Crediton Womens Institute
meeting. She was an original
member enrolled by her
mother.
Some of the highlights
were April 4, 1919, several
ladies met in the Forester
Rooms. Mrs. Haistings the
district president of W.I.
addressed the ladies.
Election of officers followed:
President, Mrs. Charles
Zwicker; vice-president,
Mrs. Christian Haist;
recording secretary, Mrs.
Herbert Eilber. Mrs. Mack
was thanked and presented
with a lovely blue and gold
floral arrangement by Mrs.
Cliff Kenney.
Mrs. Earl Haist gave an
account of the highlights of
the past 60 years. Many
worthwhile projects were
started by the organizers, an
ambitious group of 49 women
in the first years and were
continued many years after.
They encouraged children
to plant gardens, resulting in
the first school fair, a
travelling library was

established. A piano was
purchased. They raised the
money by holding oyster
suppers, box socials, booths
at public functions and
grants from the village of $20
and a government grant of
$3.
The money they earned
from some of their projects
went to the Crediton Athletic
Association in 1921 to finance
a very important project;
the buying of the Community
field. The cost was $850, $650
of it paid by the W.I. They
also financed digging a well
and providing a skating rink.
In 1924 a fine entrance to
the field was erected, pillars,
ornamental gate and plaque.
They also bought a half
share in an open air Victor
motion picture. Total cost of
gates and motion picture
was $1,155.
In December, 1923 they
held their annual oyster
supper and bazaar and
celebrated the coming of
hydro power in Crediton. In
1933 Welcome to Crediton
signs were erected at the
East and West approaches of
Crediton
One of the ladies'earnest
desires was realized in 1952
when the old town hall was
remodelled. They finally had
a kitchen. They were happy
that there was a room for a
library.
The first card parties were
held in 1948, a forerunner of
our Winter euchres.
From 1949 to 1953 Girl
Guides were sponsored. In
1956- the first 4-H
homemaking Club was
formed with 16 girls. This
year there was five clubs.
In 1977 new gates were
erected at the Community
Park. Replacing the old ones
which were destroyed by
vandals. The blue prints
being drawn by Sandra
Shapton.
This year has been a good
one with excellent meetings.
We have 39 members and 12
life members on the role.
Throughout the years there
have been speakers from
practically every profession
and interesting exchange
visits with sister Institutes.
The WI have given freely
of their time energy and
talent to help in any need in
the community. They have
given much and have gained
much themselves.
Mrs. Emmery Fahrner
was honoured for her 80th
birthday, Thursday. The
former member coming the
longest distance was Donna
Bushfield of Woodstock. She
was presented with an
Institute plate.
Mrs. Earl Neil read a
poem written in 1919 by Mrs.
Todd of Orillia. She was a
president at that time,
“What Institute means to
me.”
Mrs. Mack reminisced and
showed some of her
treasured mementoes from
Institute.
Mrs. Bruce Shapton
presented Mrs. Gerald
Dearing with a scroll of the
first meeting to be hung in a
place of prominence in the
Institute room.

Some of the residents of
Crediton have been observed
taking advantage of the
roller skating rink at the
park. The surface is smooth
and when kept clean makes
an ideal skating surface,
although rather hard when
put in contact with a certain
part of the body.
