Times-Advocate, 1979-04-04, Page 17Times-Advocate, April 4, 1979 fag« 17 The Huron Country Playhouse has announced a five-play, 10-week season of summer stock . favorites Wednesday, to run from June 27 till September 1. Artistic director James Murphy said the playhouse will present Pools Paradise, Angel Street, Harvey, The Owl And The Pussycat and The Sound of Music. The 1979 playbill tinues the theatre’s toward fewer shows longer runs and longer rehearsals, a shift intended to improve the quality of its productions. The 1976 season offered eight shows in 10 weeks, 1977 had seven shows in eight weeks and last year there Sound of Music to highlight 10-week Playhouse fare con- trend with were six shows over a nine- week period. This season, every show will be given the two-week run that was allowed to only half of last summer’s productions. The playhouse has been able to resist the ticket price increases that most other theatres have been forced into. Regular tickets remain at $6 and $5.50 for the third straight year, though the student prices have gone from $3 to $4. Nor has the playhouse had to restrict itself to the two- and three-handers with which many theatres have tried to cut costs. The Owl And The Pussycat has only two actors, but The Sound of Music will have 30 or more, while Harvey has a cast of 12. Pools Paradise calls for seven actors and Angel Street needs five. The first show, Pools Paradise, is an ecclesiastical farce by Philip King, peopled with the same characters as his earlier play, See How They Run, which the playhouse presented in 1977 and which was the first straight play ever to rate a two-week run there. The sequel — never acknowledged as such by its author — opens June 27 and runs through July 7. Angel Street, by Patrick Hamilton, was turned into the Academy Award winning film Gaslight, a suspense thriller starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. It runs from July 11 till July 21. Harvey is the classic comedy about the bemused Elwood P. Dowd and his invisible rabbit. It became a vastly successful film and television vehicle for James Stewart, who had earlier played Dowd on Broadway, although he hadn’talthough he originated the role. The playhouse version runs from July 25 till August 4. The Owl And The Pussycat, running August 8- down-to-earth romantic comedy, first done on Broadway with Alan Alda and Diane Sands and later on film with George Segal and Barbra Streisand. Does anyone not know about The Sound Of Music? The Rodgers and Hajn- merstein was the big award winner on Broadway in 1959 and then became an Oscar- winning film in 1965s making Julie Andrews a household name. It was based on the real-life adventures of the singing Trapp family in Nazi Germany. The playhouse opens it August 22 and will give the closing performance September 1. . n c r- - c-a >ot white isrc-UI IS coming Merkies Grand Bend Watch for our Grand Opening Green Houses & Garden Centre LIONESSES DONATE FUNDS — Thanks to the generosity of the Grand Bend Lionesses, children at Grand Bend Public School have a new basketball net and tether ball game.
