Ban parking
An _________U _ __ MT
dose to Main street corners usiness
As the result of a request
from Middlesex County,
Lucan council Monday night
authorized the placing of No
Parking signs on two
locations on Main street.
Works superintendent
Doug Johnson was told to put
No Parking From Here to
Corner signs at the in
tersections of Main and Alice
and William streets.
A letter from the county
engineer’s office reported
complaints from drivers
approaching the two in
tersections about blocked
visibility by automobiles.
The county letter
suggested parking be
prohibited for a distance of
50 feet at each of the corners.
Village bylaw 15-78 was
passed last year and will now
be enforced as soon as signs
are erected. It calls for no
parking within nine meters
of an intersection.
A letter from the Ontario
Ministry of Transportation
and Communications asked
that signs located outside

Hillbillies and
Munchers meet
The fifth meeting of the
Metric Munchers was held
Saturday at the home of
Pam Moor. There were
three demonstrations; the
Pink Velvet which was done
by Pam Moor, the Maple
Treasurer which was done
by Janice Kestle and the Cod
Italiano by Terri
McRoberts.
The girls discussed the
many uses of gelatine and
jelly powder. The meeting
was then adjourned and the
members ate the dishes
which they had prepared.
The next meeting is Satur
day, March 17 at. 10 a.m. at
the home of Mrs. O’Neil.
The Healthy Hillbillies 4-H
club held their fourth
meeting at the home of Nan
cy Van Geel, Wednesday.
Nancy Van Geel and Mary
Dewan made wheat germ
biscuits, cheese bacon
swirls, creamy ham and
mushroom supper.
The next meeting will be
on March 21 and 7 p.m. at
the home of Rita Dewan.
During the week officers of
the Lucan detachment of the
Ontario Provincial Police
investigated four accidents
with damages totalling
$4,750. No injuries were
reported.
Thursday at 8.30 p.m. on
Highway 4 in Biddulph
township a vehicle driven by
Keith McFarland, RR 2,
Lucan was in collision with
parked vehicles owned by
ElizabethCronyn and Gord
Beiber both of RR 2, Lucan.
Constable C. S. Fleming
listed damages at $700. ■
At 10:45 p.m. Friday a
vehicle driven by Calvin
Kaufman, London was
damaged to the extent of $400
when it left Highway 4 in
London township. Constable
Fleming was the in
vestigating officer.
About 15 minutes later in a
similar mishap on County
road 23 in London township,
Constable B, D. Munro set
damages of $3,000 to a
vehicle driven by Ray
Clements, Aylmer.
Saturday at 9.30 p.m. a
vehicle driven by Stephen
Smith, RR 4, St. Marys was
damaged to the extent of $650
in a single car mishap on the
Wellburn sideroad in West
Nissouri township, Constable
Fleming listed damages at
$650.
moved inside town boun
daries.
Street committee mem
bers Harry Wraith and Gary
Me Falls along with
superintendent Doug
Johnston will attempt to find
new locations at both ends of
the village on Highway 4.
The Lions club and Royal
Canadian Legion who appear
on the signs will then be
notified that the village will
be moving them.
MTC officials are also
asking that speed limit signs
at the northerly limit of the
village on Highway 4 be
changed.
Presently northbound
traffic leaving the village
may travel at 70 kilometers
per hour while the maximum
speed for southbound
vehicles is 60 kilometers.
When the bylaw was
passed a year ago council
asked for the lower speed for
traffic heading south
because of the proximity of
the public school.
A bylaw was passed
Monday allowing for an
increase in salaries for
members of the Lucan
Hydro Electric Commission.
Under the new rates the
chairman will receive $30 for
each regular monthly
meeting and each of the two
commissioners will get $25.
For each special meeting
to a maximum of six per
year the chairman will
receive $35 and members $30
each.
In approving the request
from the Commission, reeve
Ivan Hearn said, “I know of
some communities no larger
than ours where Hyudro
members get as much as
$600 per year.”
Council approved payment
of the 1979 levy to the
Ausable-Bayfield Conser
vation Authority in the
amount of $3,430. Last year’s
payment was $2,974.
Works superintendent
Doug Johnston was given
permission to attend the C. S.
Anderson Road School at the
University of Guelph from
May 6 to 9.
In other business, council:
Will request MTC to paint
all the road markings on
Highway 4 through the
village including the school
crossing.
Learned that the final 1978
subsidy for road ex
penditures had been
received bringing the total to
$32,425.48.
Were told by councillor
Larry Hotson that the works
department should be
commended for their recent
excellent efforts to relieve
flooding problems and for
the cleanliness of village
streets.
Named a tentative date of
March 28 to set the 1979
budget and tax rate.

Just returned from a trip
out west, Calgary to be ex
act. Cold one day, then com-
, es a Chinook to warm things
up, a person never knew
what to wear. The drive
home was something else.
Other than truck trouble, it
was uneventful that is until
we entered Thunder Bay,
you wouldn’t believe the
snow.
The banks along the
streets and highways were
at least 10 to 15 feet high, we
drove east along Number
17 where about 25 miles east
of Terrace Bay we ran into a
white-out - the snow storm
was so intense it was im
possible to see over 5 to 10
feet ahead.
On reaching White River a
west bound motorist advised
it had taken him four hours
to travel 70 miles. We decid
ed to move on driving most
ly in the left lane as it was
the only one plowed, when
we observed headlights ap
proaching, it was over to the
right trying to make your
own trail through the drifts.
This continued to about 50
miles north of the Soo
where, would you believe it

About 50 women were
present Wednesday at the
first session of Lucan United

programme. During the first
hour, the women divided into
three groups according to
interest.
Mrs. Barb Wallace gave
the first of two demon
stations on cake decorating
to her enthusiastic group.
Mrs. Betty Kirby and Mrs.
Marie Gingerich gave an
informative and challenging
presentation of the work of
Meadowcrest Residences
Inc. which consists of three
group homes for han
dicapped adults located in
this area.
Mrs. Genevieve Nicholson
and Niles Nicholson gave a
helpful demonstration on the
care of house plants.
A break for coffee and
conversation followed; then
hostess, Mrs. Honor Stanley
welcomed the ladies, and
introduced the theme
speaker, Mrs. Anne Elliott of
Strathroy.
Mrs. Elliott’s series,
“Invitation to Live” began
with a talk entitled, “God’s
Answer toHopelessness.”She
traced the story of Rahab,
the Harlot as an example of a
person in a hopeless con
dition who responded by
faith to God’s invitation to
her.
As a result, she and all her
family were saved when the
Israelite forces took Jericho.
“Big doors of hopelessness
swing on little hinges of faith
- when that faith is in a great
God who can do anything,”
said Mrs. Elliott.
Similarly today, those who
are faced with situations that
appear hopeless can come in
their need to Christ who is
the Answer and the Enabler
for all who come trusting
Him.
This morning, Wednesday,
Barb Wallace will continue
her cake decorating class,
Donna Thompson will
demonstrate needlepoint,
and Mrs. Jean Edwards will
show a film dealing with the
problems of crippled and deaf
children. There are still
openings in these last two
groups, and all women of the
community are invited to
participate.
Ivan Stanley.
Low score for the ladies
was Mrs. Wally Haygarth
and the mens low score by
Mr. Earl Anderson.
Mrs. Maurice McDonald
carried away the prize for
the most lone hands in the
ladies competition followed
by Mr. Percy Williams in the
mens event.
The beautiful floral
arrangement, supplied most
generously by Bob Turnbull
Florist of London, was won
as a door prize by Mrs.
Murray Shoebottom, with
John Huys taking the second
door prize.
Mrs. Earl Anderson was
seated on the lucky chair at
the end of the allotted
playing time and won herself
a prize.
From the thumping on the
table and the laughter that
filled the gym it sounded as
though everyone had an
enjoyable evening even
though everyone couldn’t
win.
Prizes having been
distributed, everyone
enjoyed a lunch of coffee,
tea, and sandwiches.
The branch executive
donated the prizes and lunch
with Murphy Bus Lines
providing free bus tran
sportation to and from the
school.
Len Maslen, branch
president would like to thank
all those who donated their
time and efforts to make the
event sosuccessful.
