T-A photo HAWKS vs HAWKS FOR THE THIRD TIME For the third year in a row, the Hawks from Exeter and Mitchell will square off for the northern division Junior “D” title and the locals will be trying for their third straight triumph. However, for the first time in the annual battle, Exeter will be the under-dogs as they finished second behind Mitchell in this year’s league battle. That first place finish will give Mitchell the home ice advantage for the fifth and seventh games. But Exeter coach Ron Bogart doesn’t see that as being a big advantage. In fact, he’s predicting the series will only go six games, but he isn’t making any prediction as to which team will emerge as champs. “We know they’ll be pretty tough, but we think we can take them if we play as well as we have in the past couple of games,” he said after his Hawks went through a strenuous two-hour workout Sunday. While Exeter won only one of the six meetings between the teams this year, Bogart noted that in many of those games his team enjoyed a lead but couldn’t hold on in the final period. While he won’t predict a winner, Bogart readily predicted that area fans will enjoy some excellent hockey. “The skills of the game will be displayed rather than any rough-house tactics,” he opined. “We’re ready to go and hoping for the best,” concluded. The series opened Mitchell last night and second game will be Exeter at 8:30 on Friday. Centenaires Win easily In the fourth game of their best-of-seven with Seaforth, the Hawks displayed some strong offence in the first two periods on their way to an 11- 4 win to wrap up the set in the minimum number of games. The locals scored five times in the first and added another five in the second before the managed to get one past Randy Lovie. With their 10-1 lead, the Hawks coasted through the third period and were out- scored by a 3-1 margin. One of the pleasing aspects for coach Bogart was the well-balanced attack as Jamie Caldwell was the only two-goal man in the one sided win. Single tallies were fired by Terry Caldwell, Goderich best inH-P basketball he 226,in the in H-P CAGERS — Mark Relouw (7) of Mt. T-A photo Saturday’s Huron-Perth Separate School elementary basketball tournament at South Huron District High School was won by St. Marys of Goderich. Goderich defeated St. Michael’s of Stratford by a score of 22-17 in the cham pionship game. Both clubs were undefeated in four games in round robin play. Dublin was third with three wins and a loss, Mt. Carmel was next with a two and two record, Zurich’s St. Boniface won one and lost three times while St. Marys and Kingsbridge were winless in four starts. Victories by Mt. Carmel were by scores of 37-8 over St. Marys and 44-17 against Kingsbridge. Zurich defeated Mt. Carmel in a close contest 22-21. Lome Rideout of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School was the tournament convener. Fred Mommersteeg, Phil Knight, Brad Taylor, Brian Mercer, Don McKellar, Ken Pinder, Dave Kinsman and Dave Bogart. Taylor had three assists, with one each being registered by Ken Varley, Ron Bilcke, Terry Caldwell, Bogart, Kinsman, Knight, Mommersteeg, Kerry Bedard, Mercer and Pinder. The Hawks served 18 minors and Seaforth scored all four of their goals on power plays. The Hawks failed to score on any of their power plays, but did register two short-handed goals. Randy Lovie stopped 39 shots while the Seaforth duo managed 42 saves on their 53 shots. Rally in third The Hawks won the third game of the series at the rec centre, Tuesday, following a pattern similar to their se cond game win in Seaforth. They broke a 3-3 tie in the final period to pot five times en route to their 8-4 verdict over the Centenaires. Exeter started out quickly with Dave Bogart and Jamie Caldwell connecting for goals in the first four minutes, but they couldn’t hold the lead as Seaforth rebounded to even the count at three apiece. Brian Mercer picked up the other first period goal for the Hawks. After a scoreless second, Mercer came back with his second of the game at the 2:29 mark and the rally was on. Jamie Caldwell picked up his second of the night and Don McKellar also add ed a pair in the third, with the single being triggered by Brad Taylor. Cam Doig and Paul McClure scored a pair each for the visitors, who were out-shot by a margin of 43- 23. Ken Pinder, Dave Bogart and Ken Varley had three assists each to lead the Hawks in that department, while aiding on one each were Brian Mercer, Doug Fletcher, Dave Kinsman, Jamie Caldwell, Terry Caldwell and Don McKellar. Seaforth served 10 penalties, coinparied to the seven meted out to Exeter. The Hawks scored on two power-plays, while the Centenaires connected on one and also scored while playing a man short. Times-Advocate, February 28, 1979 Rig* 11 Irish stubborn in defeat The Lucan Irish proved to be very stubborn before bowing to the Mitchell Hawks in the semi-final round of the OHA Western Junior "D” series. With the series tied at one game apiece, Mitchell took three straight games this week but all were by close scores. The Hawks won 7-5 Tuesday, 3-2 Wednesday and won the series with a 9-6 win Saturday night after 10 minutes of overtime. The Irish fought back from a late third period two goal deficit to get the equalizer with only 49 seconds left in regulation time to force an extra 10 minutes of play. Mitchell scored three times in the last two minutes and two seconds of overtime. The only goal of the first period was fired by Keith Hartwick of Lucan on a pass from Jeff Marshall. The Irish continued to hold the one goal margin at 4-3 after the second period was completed. Bob Elliott knotted the count for Mitchell at 2.07 of the second period but Jeff Hartman quickly restored the Lucan lead a minute later as he converted a pass from John Jongeneel. The Lucan margin went to two goals at 4.57 as Keith Hartwick triggered his second successful shot of the night on a three-way passing combination with Brian Murray and Jeff Marshall. In the last six minutes of the middle period, Brad Law and Paul Avery hit for Mitchell and Martin Duenk replied for the Irish with assists going to Brian Murray and Todd McKinley. In the first seven minutes of the third period, Mitchell went on a scoring spree and took a 6-4 edge on the scoreboard. Mike Avery hit the Lucan net with two shots and Eric Beard scored one goal. With less than five minutes left, Keith Hartwick registered his third goal of the night and the clock was down to 29 seconds when a Lucan power play paid off. Scoring was Bob Hodings with passing help coming Volleyball girls second The South Huron District High School senior girls volleyball team finished second in the Huron-Perth Conference tournament held Friday in St. Marys.
