Ten students anxiously await the start of the school’s annual Public Speaking Competition. Four juniors, Doug Schade, Karen Schade, Danny Mellin, and Greg Becker and six seniors; Roxanne Woods, Susan McClure, Arlene Walper. Marsha Clarke, Kathy Schade and Doug Woodburn are the speakers. The speeches begin. After each person completed their speech they breathe a sigh of relief. The judges now have the unenviable task of choosing four speakers to advance to further competition. The results have been decided. 1st - Roxanne Woods. 2nd - Arlene Walper, 3rd - Kathy Schade, 4th - Susan McClure. All contestants are to be congratulated for all the speeches were excellent. By MARTINE MacDONALD Wednesday January 24, grades 6 to 8 had a Sadie Hawkins dance, sponsored by the grade 8 graduation committee. The committee raised $15. The dance was a great success. I.Y.S. stands for Inter national Youth Service. Headquarters are in Finland. I.Y.S. was founded in 1952 and it’s the largest pen-friend organization in the world. They have pen friends from 10-20 years old in over 100 countries. It costs $.80 to cover postage and paper for a pen friend. I have a pen-friend in the United States. Her name is Lisa, age 15. I don’t want to really write to her so I’m writing to her sister, Cora age 11. Cora and I have more in common. W’e both wear glasses, and we like the same T.V. shows. I thank I.Y.S. for sending me such good Pen-friends. By KAREN HODGE As most of you may already know, our school has started a skating program as a part of our physical education. We participate in activities such as relays and obstacle courses. I really enjoy skating and feel that this program has improved my ability to skate a great deal. I hope it has helped all the students who participate as well. I myself won’t be able to take part in the program next year but here’s hoping we are able to carry this on in the 1979-1980 school year. The grade 7 and 8 students are having exams and I am sure no one is looking for ward to them. The reason we are having exams early this year is because if you pass these exams you may not have to write again at the end of June. That would be great and it’s worth that extra study now so you won’t have to put in a lot of study later. P.S. Stay tuned next time and hear more exciting news right from Stephen Central School about two topics speeches, and our operetta. Mankind has always felt a need for something Spiritual. God’s love for everyone is real but He does not force it upon us we must seek Him through prayer. A good parent is one who demands respect from his children and so it with us. We must take time to ap proach our Heavenly Father in prayer with awe, respect and admiration. We are reminded of God’s power in the beauty of the earth and that His love is constant not varying like human love. The children’s story was told by Mrs. Schott and the choir sang an anthem.
