SUMMERS GRANTON Unit I met at home of Mrs^ Glen Jameson on Monday with Mr$. Gordon McRobert presiding. The scripture was read and this tied in with the theme of the lesson thoughts on building a way to Heaven. Three announcements were made, (1) The World Day of Prayer to be held in Granton United on March 2 (2) The UCW Presbyterial meeting in Trinity United Church (3) an invitation to attend the series of lectures and discussions taking place on Mondays during February at Bryanston United Church. The program was con­ vened by Mrs. Elmer Summers and Mrs. Elwood Morden. Mrs. Summers took the Bible study on the con­ tinuing series on the Lord­ ship of Jesus, this day’s subject dealt with our in­ terpretation of the Bible. Do we know what we read? and how do we interpret what we read? This resulted in much discussion. Mrs. Morden read a story from a collection of tales by the noted journalist Gregory Clarke entitled “Bird of Promise”. This was about a robin. It was like a breath of Spring, amid all this snow. Lunch was served by the hostess and her assistants, Mrs. C. B. Westman and Mrs. C, McRobert. Unit 4 met at the hqme of Mrs. Norman Riddell on February 7. Mrs. Nelson Tate presided. Mrs. Harvey Kennedy who was in charge of the program presented a paper on the continuing Bible Study the Lordship of Jesus, this version was entitled “Why do we read the Bible?” This was followed by a good discussion. Mrs. Kennedy also read a poem and a poem in keeping with the season was read by Mrs. Gerald Dann entitled “Winter Lullaby.” Mrs. James Kerr assisted the hostess to serve lunch. Mrs. Jim Riddell was the hostess for Unit 3 on February 5. Mrs. Leroy Bryan presided and opened the meeting with a reading pertaining to children, as 1979 is to be the year of the child. It was announced that this Unit would again sponsor learning classes on crochet and needlepoint, the first class to take place at the church on February 22. Mrs. Doug Brown and Mrs. Ken Waugh were in charge of the program on the Bible study. This resulted in a good discussion, with the con­ clusion that the Bible was telling us to love our neigh­ bors as ourselves. Various scripture passages were then read and a discussion followed on the conservative, liberal and radical outlook of these passages. The hostess was assisted with lunch by Mrs. Garfield Nixon and Mrs. Wm. Thomson. Unit 5 cancelled their meeting in February as most of the members are from the north of Granton and live in the country. 4H news Group I 4-H “Essential Edibles” celled their meeting on February 5 due to bad weather conditions Group 2 met at the home of leader Mrs. Noon on Saturday. Susan Noon opened the meeting with the 4H pledge. It was decided to attend the Ice Capades in London, March 6. The members were asked to bring their money to the next meeting. The club then discussed a name and decided to call themselves the “Granton Grams”. Bonnie Harloff and Shannon Fiedorec made healthy peanut- bread, and Brend Tomlin and Susan Noon made energy squares. Teresa McCarthy and Dawn Jenson offered to make the Potato Cheese Chowder at the next meeting. Mrs. Noon talked about brunch menus, and then the healthy peanut bread and energy squares were sampled. Court Valentine entertain On Tuesday the ladies of Court Valentine Canadian Foresters celebrated their Lodge’s birthday with a family pot luck supper held at the Mason’s Hall with cake and ice-cream for dessert. Granton bride-elect honored Miss Marnie Rooney whose marriage to Bill Westman takes place on February 17 was honored with a community shower in the basement of Granton United Church on February 6. Mrs. Shirley Bannerman and Mrs. Willa Harding were in charge of arrangements. There was a program with Margaret McGuffin favoring with two pianoforte solos, followed by two contests conducted by Mrs. Harding. Tammy Metlin won the first one which was an elimination contest and Mrs. Doreen McRobert was the winner of the word game. Assisting Marnie to open her many gifts was Barbara Hudson, Jeanette Rooney and Debbie Pratt. Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins and Mrs. Lois Herbert were dinner guests of Mrs. Myrtle Rodd of Exeter on Wednesday and later called on Frank Squire at the Blue Water Nursing Home in Zurich, also Mrs. Albert Scott at the Hillside Nursing Home in Mitchell. Mrs. Joyce Hodgins opened the meeting with prayer and meditation. The Rev. Aubrey Bell showed a film of the work of the Anglican Church, in Africa. Mrs. Donna Hodgins and Tod Hodgins visited the Birthday Bank. Plans were made to host the World Day of Prayer service for area church ladies, March 2. UCW meets While the Anglican ladies were meeting the United Church Women were holding their meeting at the home of Mrs. Violet Brown. Mrs. Iva Lagerwerf led in the opening worship and in the study period. The roll call was answered by an exchange of Valen­ tines. Plans were completed for the variety supper this Friday evening, when the Rev. and Mrs. Moore will show their pictures of England and Scotland. Mrs. Doris Eagleson assisted the hostess in serving lunch dur-* ing the social hour. At the United Church ser­ vice, Sunday Chad Gordon Kenney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Kenney, and grandson of Mr. arid Mrs. Gordon Woodburn, was baptized by Rev. Harley Moore. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at the Gilpin Funeral Home, Thedford, for the late Albert Romphf. Our sympathy is extended to his family. Church news At the Unped Church Rev. Elwood Morden conducted the morning, worship on February dl continuing with his sermon series on the Lord’s'Prayer, He took the phrase “Hallowed be Thy Name” for his message. In the first part of the prayer we glorify God before we ask for personal help. When Jesus asked his disciples to pray Hallowed be Thy Name He is asking them to revere God. The next euchre will be held February 20, 8:15 p.m. at the Crediton Hall, March of Dimes The canvass for the March of Dimes is underway in Crediton. Please give generously when a can- vasser calls on you. The money donated is used for the disabled adult population of Ontario. Last year over 25,000 peo­ ple were helped through the rehabilitation program and other services. United Church News Rev. Harold Snell of Ex­ eter was in charge of the service Sunday. Rev. Snell spoke on “The mission of the church in the world today.” The annual meeting will be held Thursday evening, February 15. February 22, Rev. and Mrs. Hiscock from Marathon will be at the church.
