Riding to victory in the bike contest were Brad Taylor, Grant Love, Rob Pryde, Mike Burke and Steve Skinner. f./y photo Liquor infractions up Accidents decline in '78 While the incidents related to alcohol were up in Exeter in 1978, the number of ac­ cidents and the resulting damage from them dropped considerably. The 145 accidents listed in the annual statistics com­ piled by Chief Ted Day represented a decline of 24 over the previous year. He attributed that to the in­ stallation of traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 4 and 83, a previously high accident site. The property damage in accidents was listed at $112,488, a decline of $30,278 over the previous year. There were no fatalities, but 34 people sustained injuries. A total of 176 people were charged under the Highway Traffic Act, 206 given warnings and five vehicles were seized. There were 54 bicycle riders cautioned and 25 motor vehicle defect tickets issued by the police. There were 97 occurrences dealing with alcohol in 1978, compared to 82 the previous year. Sixty-seven charges were laid under the Liquor Control Act and nine for impaired driving. During the year, 138 special occasion permits were issued to local groups and citizens. The police investigated five thefts of over $200 each. The total loot was $3,310 none of which has been recovered. There were 90 thefts of under $200 with loot of $4,463 of which $1,091 was recovered. Twelve adults and five juveniles were charged in the thefts under $200 and another 13 juveniles were given warnings and their parents notified. A total of 22 break-an-enter investigations were con­ ducted with stolen property listed at $1,363 of which $47.95 was recovered. Seven males were arrested and faced 12 charges as a result of the break and enters. Another five were charged with possession of stolen goods from those breakins. Six vehicles were reported stolen, all being recovered except a boat trailer. Three people were charged as a result of those thefts. Five charges were laid following fraud in­ vestigations. Fifteen mischief in­ vestigations were conducted with damage being $775 and restitutionof $450. The police department issued 176 parking tickets during 1978 and there was a total of 3,112 occurences, up 221 from the previoud year.
