Times-Advocate, 1979-02-14, Page 7• Women at Elmville host euchre party By KATHY COOPER ELIMVILLE The Elimville United Church Women met recently at the church. The vice president Mrs. Philip Hern opened the meeting with a poem “Heights”. The roll call was answered by “name your winter hobby or craft” and also a donation for cards, Thames Road United Church Women will be in­ vited to the World’s Day of Prayer, March 2. The prices of serving meals and the cost of quilting a quilt was discussed. Mrs. Horace Delbridge and Mrs. Elson Lynn were in charge of the program for the Christian and Mission Education Committee. Mrs, Lynn opened the meeting with a poem “The New Year” and a poem “The Twelve Months.” She also led in prayer. Everyone joined in singing “For the Beauty of the Earth.” Mrs, Delbridge read the scripture and also read an article on the Beginning of Christianity. A film “Bread, Oddfellows busy fellows Exeter Lodge No. 67 of the Independent Order of Oddfellows met at the lodge hall for their weekly meeting, February 8. Plans were made to finalize the lodge’s trips to Seaforth and Springfield, respectively. About 15 brothers, in­ cluding Noble Grand Ray Mills and Vice Grand, Floyd Cooper, travelled to Seaforth Lodge where they presented the travelling gavel to Huron District No. 8 to Noble Grand Lyle Haney. Exeter Lodge officers assisted in the opening and closing of the meeting. During the course of the evening, a team from Monkton Lodge conferred the Initiatory Degree on two candidates from Seaforth. A good time was had by all. February 8 about 30 Exeter brothers motored by bus to Springfield. Here they had the pleasure of con­ ferring thefirst degree on 13 brothers' from Glanworth, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, St. Thomas and Springfield. Brother Tom Yellow acted as Degree Captain. Short adresses were given by Brother Charles Purdy of Ark Lodge No. 404, Springfield; Brother Ray Mills, Noble Grand of Exeter Lodge No. 67; Brother Leo Pressey, D.D.G.M. of Elgin District; and also greetings from Grand Lodge were extended to all by Brother Percy Noels, Grand Guar­ dian of the Grand Lodge of Ontario. After a bountiful lunch, the Exeter brothers returned home, having experienced another very fine evening in Oddfellowship. Laughter and Dignity” picturing the mission work of the church was enjoyed by all. Everyone joined in singing “This ismyFather’s World”. Several slides on the concerns in the Canadian church entitled “Huron Feathers” were shown. Everyone enjoyed a social time at the close of the meeting. Euchre party The Elimville Womens Institute held a euchre party several weeks ago at the hall. The winners were: men’s high, Floyd Cooper; lone hands, Allen Johns; low, Wm. Routly; ladies high, Elizabeth Lamport; lone hands, Verda Morrison; low, Hazel Coward. Another euchre was held last week and the winners were: men’s high, Jerry McInnis; lone, Earl Stephens; low, Clarence Sweitzer; ladies high, Shirley Cooper; lone hands, Eva Beckett; low, Dorothy Sweitzer. Another euchre will be held February 19. Young people meet The Thames Rd-Elimville Young Peoples held their meeting Sunday evening at the fire hall. Larry Smith, a member of the fire depart­ ment showed the members several films on Emergency First Aid. The members were taken on a tour of the fire hall. The young people enjoyed a lunch of popcorn and pop. Personals Mr. & Mrs. Alvin Cooper visited Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Don Parsons and family, Sunday. Mr. & Mrs. Ken Lovie, Shipka, Mr. & Mrs. Russell Morley and Ralph, Danny and Shari Morley, Exeter, Gerald Morley and Cathie Horrell, London visited Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Cooper and family. Edwards More fair specials offered Double prizes for ladies' work The ladies division of the 1979 Exeter Fall Fair is offering the biggest and best program to competitors in the history of the fair. President Dolores Shapton said, this week that prize monies will be more than doubled from last year and a number of additional specials are being added. The laadies executive which also includes vice- president Shirley Cooper Gals ready for John! Following a break for the holiday season, Alpha Pi Chapter resumed activities on January 9 with a meeting at Sharon McNeilly’s. Kenley Campbell cohostessed the evening. The program for the evening dealt with estate planning and the members present enjoyed a talk by George Godbolt dealing with this subject. It was “Tuesday Night Fever” on January 23 at Barb Grant’s home. Deb Wooden assisted in the program topic of "Teaching Others” by giving basic pointers in the popular art of disco dancing —■ John Travolta, Alpha Pi is ready 11 and secretary Maxine Sereda is currently busy with the thread, needles and quilting frames. They are making a quilt, crib quilt and cushion which will be offered as prizes in a draw to be made at the con­ clusion of the fair Saturday night, September 22,1979. One of the new specials being offered will be open to all church and ladies organizations in the area, exclusive of Women’s Institutes. The regular WI special will be continued. The Exeter Agricultural Society is offering a new old fashioned special. It will go to the best arrangement in an antique container using a milk can, bucket, etc., to celebrate the 125th anniver­ sary of the fair. The winning entry will appear on the stage for the Friday night fair perfor­ mance. A new light cake special is also being added to depict the 125th year. First prize is $20. Mrs. Shapton reports a new quilt competition with a first prize of $10. She advises area ladies to get started now. Another added feature will be a needlepoint special. This year two commercial fruit features will be offered along with a new special for flowers. In addition a Flower Queen will be named for the first time. The men’s cake baking special is again on the fair prize list. Mayor Derry Boyle is offering a prize of $15 to the best chocolate cake baked by a male. A fair board membership costs $2 and allows all ex­ hibitor entries and admis­ sion to the Saturday portion of the fair. Former Kirkton man dies By MRS. HAROLD DAVIS Dr, Gordon Kirk formerly of Kirkton died in Wauchula, Florida, January 21 of a heart attack in his 82nd year. Mrs. Myrtle Hanna spent the weekend with her granddaughers Mr. & Mrs. Rick Husar in Toronto and Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Cumber­ batch, Brampton. Mrs. Pearl Budden spent the weekend with her son Mr, & Mrs. Boyd Budden and family of Goderich.
